He looks adorable doesn't he, well we spent a couple of worrying hours at the vets, took him for a walk this morning and he picked up a stick (as he usually does) then it broke and he started choking and frothing at the mouth, I tried to get it out but he kept biting me, I found rubbing him on the throat seemed to soothe it so my missus phoned the emergency vet and took him in, he was so distressed I was upset my missus was upset, they tried to get it out but he wouldn't let them in the end they had to put him out, he's home now and it's so funny it's like he's drunk wobbling about all over the place, it was a scare though, I know he's not ours but we love him like he is although he did cost us nearly 300 quid today I consider it money well spent.
He's our frankie our other grandchild.

Scary when this sort of thing happens
My dad rescued a collie several years ago when the owner threw a ball which was a little too small and it got stuck in the dog's throat. The poor owner was in hysterics watching her dog slowly slipping away, dad reacted quickly by grabbing the dog's throat and reached in to scoop the ball out. As soon as the ball was out the collie jumped up and was back to his usual self!
My poor lad was accidentally poisoned by my mum when she dropped a bottle of Ibruphen on the floor and he licked some of it up. I didn't know and my mum didn't either that's its toxic to dogs.
He spent a couple of worrying nights in the vets being pumped clean. What's was even worse for me was being stuck in Cyprus at the time.

That is sad Nick. Sorry to hear that medications like these do not come with animal effect warnings as well as ones for children. Chocolate, though not a medicine (technically:O), is poisonous to Dogs as well, maybe this needs a warning?

Yep my daughter has him insured but we didn't know who they were and she's a cabin manager with easy jet and we couldn't contact her so we paid, not that I mind if he had cost a 1000 pound that would have been fine, he's family.

14 years ago.
Our youngest daughter knocked on the door with a tiny ball of fur.
"Mia's had her kittens but this one died".
Gentle heart massage and blowing in its mouth revived her.
We named her ELLie. "Eight Lives Left".
She finally used up the rest of them earlier this year. <:(

Two weeks ago we lost our Ten year old Airedale Terrier
to a Brain Tumour.
Swimbo cannot live without a dog in the house, so tomorrow
we go to Derby to 'look at' a lakeland terrier pup so the worry
will start all over again.

You'll have fun with a Lakeland terrier pup! Lovely dog and very caring but intelligent with it too!
My little 'sod' sorry lovely little lad is four and it's amazing how he still acts like a pup :-))
And butter wouldn't melt in his mouth either I've been told- I know better! :D

we are down to just 5 cats now, having lost 2 of the older ones in the last few months, yet our 23 year old cat is still going strong

23 years old! And I thought our cat was getting on a bit at 19/20 (we're not 100% sure how old she was when we got her). She's given us some scares over the years and racked up the vet's bills. She costs us about £1K a year in meds and vet's bills, but what else can you do, she's part of the family, even if she is getting a bit cantankerous in her old age! :-)

Her mum still rules our daughters home of 3 dogs, a hairless cat which the eldest dog still thinks is a puppy, 50 odd Axelottles (anybody want some?) the chooks and the 2 legged inhabitants.

We had 14 years of happy memories (perhaps not the headless rabbits she used to leave as presents for us but she meant well)
Her mum still rules our daughters home of 3 dogs, a hairless cat which the eldest dog still thinks is a puppy, 50 odd Axelottles (anybody want some?) the chooks and the 2 legged inhabitants.
So, does your eldest dog try to suckle, lick and pick said cat up by the neck? Much to its chagrin no doubt!

It certainly feels like a zoo when they go on holiday and we have to look after them all.
He certainly licks the cat. Our daughter has some video on Facebook of the two of them together. The cat "Sly" has got used (or resigned) to it.

Funny you should say that. Our cat had her 6 monthly check-up last week and our 'favourite' vet (who's a highly qualified feline expert by speciality) was talking about some new research that shows that old animals can suffer from dementia, just like humans.
A good example of one of the 'new' text abbreviations for seniors using mobiles - FWIW = Forgot Where I Was!
Hope he's OK and found his way back to the bed/chair/cushion or whatever!

After our 7year old GSD died from kidney cancer we 'rescued' a 12 yr old GSD x Bernese mountain dog. Now 14. He has health issues with his larynx and arthritis in his back legs. We could get insurance £40 per WEEK!!! and not covering existing problems. We were offered an op to help his breathing ,called a 'Tie back' it ties back his vocal chords. £4000 and a less than 50% chance of survival. We just keep paying for the vet visits and medication. But they are a worry. One day he was 'hawking' to clear his throat, then I noticed a piece of grass sticking out of his nostril, when I pulled it out it was a foot long and he stopped hawking.

Hairless cat - syphix - the boss had one well his girlfriend actually - along with 13 others assorted normal cats, they excrete an oil from the skin and coats everything it touches, knuckles as they 'BOX' rather than scratch, apparently its quite a powerful punch.

well it must have been age degeneration, our 23 year old boy passed on last weekend, I went down on the saturday morning and there he was. ah well he had a good run.

Sorry for the long wait he was supposed to be a pedigree daxie bought from a kennel club registered breeder but turns out he's a daxie chiwawowa cross, she did get most of her money back, but apparently there are six otheres now fighting for their money back.

Sorry to hear that, but as you said, he had a good run. After the initial shock and upset, it's good to think back at the many years of good times you've shared.

Had the idea was a Dachsund some where in there, my favourite breed of dog, but also more of the chewie, similar looking facially but the dachs got the longer nose, interesting fact of dachs is I believe they decended from the Manchester, as is the Doberman, the Manchester is a quarter scale whippet looking ratter, where the dachs got its good looks from :}

I heard there are paintings of Dachshunds in the pyramids. We lost both of ours this year. Both long haired standards. The old one (16) reached the end blind, deaf, semi paralysed rear end and senile. We had her euthanised. The younger one 12 and fit as a fiddle was off her food over the weekend, took her to the vet Monday morning, blood test showed massive white cell count and vertually nil red cells. She died before they could start a transfusion. Sad year. We still have our 6 year old shitzu/ Rottweiler cross. She's the double of chewbacca in Star Wars.

Dachs are a tough breed, bred to hunt Badgers originally. My wife wanted a Bearded Collie, but at the time could not find any pups in reasonable travelling distance, so she settled for a Tibetan Terrier. An boy is it yappy, was not till after we had him that I found out that they are not true terriers but small long haired watch dogs. He may be stubborn etc, but he cost me £1500 early this year, he had a bad hernia between his legs, the vet said it was due to him producing too much testosterone, it was rotting the muscle away, so he opened him up and utilised another less used muscle, but he had to be castrated to stop the repair and other muscles being rotted out. Now I can let him of the lead on walks without him running off after bitches, but wow has he put on weight, now we are all on a diet.

First ever dachs was a standard short hair when I was a child, till someone knocked at the door, and being locked in the kitchen chewed his way through the door, that's when I was 5, was given to a butcher apparently {:-{ (may have been a joke on my parents part), all the others till currently have been short haired minitures, half reds and the remainder black and tans.

oh - and yes it occurs to the smaller ones as well, the rear end going.

After 15 years without a wee dog We got another to help me overcome health problems as in getting my lazy backside out walking again
The only problem is by the time she is tired Im totally worn out and get no shop time :-) They did tell me Borders are energetic now our lass wants another %)

Oh she is a real sweety unless youre a rabbit or a squiggle,and rats are another story :-) didnt even know we had a few hump back visitors in an outbuilding till she cleared them.I have to be careful as we have a dog fox knocking about and she hates him with a vengance .I guess no matter what I do I will never take away her working heritage, She is a soft as a brush and loves people and other dogs but will stand her ground when pushed.
If Im playing on the lathe or computer she starts talking when she thinks Iv had enough play time :-) and even decides when its my bed time like now :-)
They are great friends but sadly they leave to early
