Hi all, this may or may not happen, it will be the biggest project I've ever taken on I've been playing with the layout, it will be huge (I may have to try and make it in 2 halves somehow to store and work on it) anyway I cut the footprint of all the the vehicles and have placed them roughly (obviously a piece of oblong paper doesn't really look anything like a car or bus but it gives me an idea of scale needed, as you can see I can't really make it any smaller but I will need a few more cars ( any suggestions on iconic British cars availiable in 1/24)

This is something like I'm hoping to depict.

Definitly ambitious Ken. As for classic motors of the era in 1:24th, I was looking at suitable cars for conversion a'la Fury Road and the market is well primed with American models and very bitty and predictable where British makes are concerned. In 1:43rd mind you, there is a wealth of diecast models of all makes and types but obviously not what you are after sadly unless you use your successful forced perspective technique which you used for the warspite diorama?
-
Hi mate well my missus is getting me a London taxi a mini a jag a Roller and a mini for my birthday I already have a bently blower, I've been told there's a land rover in 1/24 but not been able to find it, I have found an mgb, will keep looking.
-
Sounds like you are nearly there then. Great news :-)) An early 'landy' will look good, perhaps a police one. Did the Met use Land Rovers in this period? Perhaps a BBC one in that green grey:O)
-
Hi all well here is the first tentative steps in this one, I've primed and top coated the Bentley, won't get much else done as on hols on Friday, really need this holiday work is soooooooooooo stressful at the moment.

Yes, the Met used Land-Rovers at that time. My dad was in Traffic from 1966 through to retirement in the late 90's and I remember him driving them during the late 60's and 70's. They were used as traffic incident support vehicles (SETAC - specially equipped traffic accident car) and carried all the equipment for moving damaged and wrecked vehicles out of the way on London's streets and surrounding motorways to keep the traffic moving. They were mostly SIIA's and SIII's.
Perhaps your dio could contain a traffic accident that the Land-Rover is attending?

KP, is the use of diecast cars a no-no ? There are one or two that would fit in 1/24th scale. VW truck with UK plates and livery, an MG TC is available, a Jaguar XK120 and a couple of Bugattis could all be part of rally passing through the city with the Bentley. The VW pick-up cost about £16 ready built about the same as a plastic kit. Trawl through Ebay in "Diecast models" will find many , some damaged for very little money.
-
Some 1/24th diecast models.
-
Thanks mate but, the way I see it there's no fun in diecast so I will stick with kits, I figure if I can't find enough British cars I could alway do a couple more minis or taxis maybe even another bus.
-
Ebbro citroen ds19
Tamiya Austin minI
Heller 2cv
Italieri merc 540
Tamiya beetle
Monogram e type
Esci swb racer
Revell vw t1 cargo
Revell citroen mahari
Fujimi s800
Heller citroen 15cv
These are all on ebay at present.
Sorry if some are not quite the correct era.

Hi all here is probably the last update till we get back off hols.

Hi all, well Robin (on another forum) had a great idea to add a zebra crossing to give me a cut line so as i can join the two halves together, but I've checked and can find no ref pics at any time period with a zebra crossing at picadilly circus (and I can't add something to such an iconic British landmark that wasn't there) so,,, Ive got a cunning plan, I'm going to make all the buildings and scenery removable (not sure how yet) anyway made a start on the fountain, I was going to cheat and do it as it was in ww2 but of course the route master and mini and taxi for that matter were after ww2.

I know, I know it looks like corrugated cardboard but with a bit of plaster of Paris I'm sure it will be fine (I hope)
-
Hi all can't really get into any serious modeling (no time) but decided to try another idea with the fountain made the paving slabs out of stiff paper and added pre shading, I think it's going to be OK, not sure how I'm going to handle the curb stones.
-
Lovely Ken. The paving effect is spot on.
-
Hi all done a little bit more on this.

Great progress Ken,this is coming along nicely. I hope your wife is doing well.
-
Hi all well I've started on the fountain (not sure how to do the corner ornamentation yet) but I pleased with how it's starting, this is a picture frame upside down and a bit of the ornamentation filed off its actually 2 mil to low in scale but that's only a couple of inches overall.

-
Hi all I've realised I've made a huge error with this, so huge in fact that I'm just going to have to call it a London like dio (I could never have modeled half of Eros anyway) I was so busy trying to get the hight right on the fountain, I forgot about the area of it, wasn't till I put a 1/24 figure up to it (as someone suggested) I realised, i have the width totally wrong should be at least twice as long as I have it. Although I could remake it, it would mean redoing the steps, again on could do that, the problem is I would have to scale the rest of the dio up and it's already a metre square, I have nowhere to keep a dio of over 2 metres square, so it will just have to be the way it is.
-
How about a Great War memorial instead of the fountain? It would put a spin on the diorama, showing an almost forgotten moment in history. Surrounded by the day to day activities of the 60s or 70s.
-
That was one of my original cheat ideas to board it up thus saving me the trouble of modeling it, problem is it would still be wrong scale, I'm sorely tempted to do that though.
-
Hi all well since I can't work on herbie at the moment (still waiting for decals) I decided to do a bit to this.
As you can see from this the fountain is utterly wrong, grrrr,
(http://i64.tinypic.com/2lwr8gk.jpg)
Revell made a mistake
(http://i66.tinypic.com/2zoy93r.jpg)
Oops
First coat on seats

OK so here's another update.
And I thought since this is the London bus dio I'd better start the bus (it's a lot bigger than you think and I've run out of red paint now, not even enough to finish the body on this so now I have to get some more)

Hi all did a bit more to the Bentley
(http://i67.tinypic.com/23s6wpu.jpg)
Not sure which engine for the bus
Scania
(http://i64.tinypic.com/2d7945w.jpg)
Or Leyland
(http://i65.tinypic.com/2dsmla8.jpg)
-
I think the old Gardner would be more in fitting for the time period.
Jim.
-
Still not sure which engine
Scania

The Routemasters started out with AEC power units but these were replaced in the eighties by the Leyland before later eing replaced by Scania units as emissions regs were tightened up. The Leyland would be the best to go for given the lack of an AEC unit. I love AEC vehicles and so am a natural NERD!
I love love love the effect you have got on the seats in the Bentley! It is just like certain types of leather that coats are made of. You are definitely on form Mr Ken.

It is interesting how in different light, the seats seem to be different colours! In the earlier photos, the seats looked quite brown, but in the last phots they are green. I like the Bus engine :-))
-
Hi all another update, I lost one of the stub axles or whatever they are so I had to scratch build a new one, cocktail stick to the rescue again (I find them sooooo useful)

Make sure you choose a cocktail stick aith a straight grain as I have sorted through hundreds of the to find strong ones for my Tudor ships. The diagonally grained ones are just too weak for any structural work.
Your bus chassis looks filthy by the way :-)) 8)

Hi all well it was my birthday today and we had family over, are grandchildren born with a funny bone, sitting in the dining room and the light goes out, Meg pokes her head round the corner and says shh it's a secret papa granny's got you a birthday cake just as the cake is bought in the door, we were in fits of laughter, she's 3.
Here is part of my haul (still have some to pick up from my mums and pam says 2 cars are still awaiting delivery) I'm chuffed for one birthday.
These are for this dio as I said the mini and jag are still in the post
(http://i66.tinypic.com/a0cn5l.jpg)
And this is for light releif (I've got plans for it and those who know me know it won't be like the box art)( and I mean nothing like the box art)

Nice collection. :-)) My birthday Sunday. I'll be lucky to get a bar of fruit and nut again! <:(

I love the Bentley! I wish you well in building all those great models ken. The Lotus looks interesting,I have not seen the kit before.
I wish someone would do a kit of the Mk3 Cortina in 1:24th.
-
Belkits do a 1:24 Escort MkI.
Doyusa do a 1:24 Capri MkI
Scalekraft transkit do a 1:24 1967 Lotus Cortina, but alas no MkIII
-
Doyusha capri discontinued <:(
-
It is a bad state of affairs. I appreciate that your Diorama is tooo early for the MkIII. The Bus is coming along nicely.
-
I'm not to worried about timelines it's more British icons (although I draw the line at the new so called mini by BMW, you could probably fit an actual mini in its boot)
-
Hi all well the Bentley finished now.

Groovy man! Love the Bentley, gorgoeusly painted without any surface blemishes or orange peeling :-)) The bus is a big kit, I have it but haven't done much to it.
-
Hi all, dropped the Bentley, may have to buy another one, grrrr, anyway did more on the bus.
-
So sorry to hear that Ken. If the paintwork isn't too badly damaged, can you not fix it?
If nothing else maybe you can harvest the excellent seats and other fittings from it to go in a new model?
-
Hi mate got most of it back together but can't find the headlights, it hit the floor front first so they could have pinged off anywhere
-
Hi all here is the next update, with the drivers cab I thought (my dad was a conductor on London buses when I was a youngster so I saw loads of buses) I never saw one where the glass between the cab and passenger compartment wasn't stained with nicotine (not that I knew that's was what it was then) (everyone used to smoke then) so I've tried (not as well as I would have liked to depict that) nearly made the mistake of putting the lid on the cab then remembered I've got to add a driver.

Hi all well i have more kits for this now (the range rover is thanks to polux)(I will be doing it as a police range rover don't think the rally version would look right in London)

The transit is a nice touch. Excellent progress on restoring the Bus. The cab looks great and catches the feel well as does your Fountain.
-
Hi
These kits may be hard to find, but are excellent!
I have had these for years as I have a full-size version. :-))

-
Thanks swill.
Here is the next update, nearly finished the fountain
(http://i63.tinypic.com/b6y5ok.jpg)
Just have to figure out how to do the water jets.
-
There are definitely products out there in the model railways world that make water. Woodland scenics make a product that you can pour out of the bottle. I am sure I have seen people use it for moving water by making moulds and pouring the material into them before assembling the parts to create waterfalls etc. I made fast running water in some wargames terrain using gloss varnish and cling film pieces to provide the animation.
-
Never tried a fujimi kit before I must say initial inspection looked good but, the colour callouts are vague to say the least, the plastic is incredibly fragile, I broke the kingpin off and I hardly touched it
(http://i65.tinypic.com/2w32hsj.jpg)
Then when I went to fix it I discovered it is totally wrong
(http://i63.tinypic.com/2jfk60x.jpg)
It is actually moulded coming out of the break disc.
I think that is a pretty fundamental mistake and very early in the build, I reserve judgement but not looking good at the moment.
-
Normally Italeri were the guilty party in manufacturing in brittle plastics but Fijumi could have the odd batch of poorly recycled plastic. Their kit subjects though were excellent for their time.
-
Hi all here is the next bit
(http://i64.tinypic.com/bj8tjq.jpg)
Buffed up the body a bit before adding the decals, needs a bit more doing to it but quite pleased so far.
Just to say I've not stopped on the bus (those seat decals are a real pain in the bum) I've not posted progress pics as it would be boring but nearly there on them)
-
That paint is excellent considering its price. Its a gift that keeps on giving looking at that finish.
-
Hi all got some more done on the lotus and the bus. I've got to say I'm in awe of the engineering of the bus(when I left school I worked at loading the hoppers on injection moulding machines so I know the work that goes into the moulds of fairly simple things (I mean the items have to be able to be removed from the moulds) there is some amazing engineering on those seat frames.
The seat decals though if I never see another one I will be happy.
The lotus kit I'm warming to everything seems to fit well (do not like the decals, but could say that of a lot of premium kits) (they seem very stiff I'm hoping the gold body fine lines conform better)

-
Old decals can get brittle, there may be a trick to soften them, do a search online and you might find something . I don't know if it would affect water penetration (assuming water slide paper) or color, but glycerin/glycerol might do it. I would try a test sample first.
-
Used to use this stuff with great results years ago on all decals on Airfix Type decals

A model that large does call out for popliating. Are they Revell figures for particularly for the bus or a generic set?
-
Just a generic set
-
Hi all started the decals on the lotus, they're very tricky

Hi all here is another update, I've got all the decals on the lotus and given it a Polish, I'm really chuffed with it, it's a mirror finish (doesn't really show in the pics but trust me it is) also did some more on the fountain, again I'm really pleased at the effect so far.

I like the running water effect, fishing line or optical fibre??
-
Yep fibre optics
-
Hi all well the lotus is finished, I have to say I'm more than chuffed with it, I think it is the best model I've ever made bar none.

Hi all bit of a disaster with the bus dropped it, we happened to be looking after our daughters dog (it's the fastest thing in the world when you drop something) it's eaten the steering wheel hopefully it won't notice when I use one out of the scraps drawer.
-
I love the Lotus ken, the finish and decals are fab. very well applied with no distortions or lumps :-)) As for your poor Bus, I am sure it will look alright on the night.
How is your wife doing? I saw her in the background of the Lotus and thought of her.
-
Hi mate thanks for that she's much better, we're having multi room sky in the bedroom as she can't sit for long but can lay in bed OK so we're usually in bed by 8 pm, she is on the mend though, thanks for thinking of her.
-
Hi all well the bus is fixed

I think the Routemaster lends it self to being a kit so well. The entrance and stairs would be almost pointless to model if the back were enclosed with doors.
It has a surprising amount of plastic especially as it has inner and outer skins.
Lovely job Ken. I saw the table mat in the photo and at first thought you might have taken up embroidery as well!
-
It's good init took ages to do i thought the grapes turned out well, if you look at the other photos you can see I had a go at vertical blinds also.

It looks the part with the passengers aboard. The large scale also helps make it so much more realistic, the figures are pretty good as well in style and pose.
-
Hi all done a bit more on the bus ( I definitely have too many balls in the air)

Coming along superbly Ken my boy!
That red gloss finish is amazing, lovely smooth coat.
-
Thanks mate, it's a superbly engineered kit some very clever engineers were involved it the creation of this kit.
-
Hi all here's today's bit, first non perfect fitting bit (where the bit beneath the bonnet just won't stay glued I think I will just have to take it off and shave some off the front chassis) it's still an amazingly engineered build.

Hi all here is the next update, all the windows on this have a black rubber surround and it was taking me ages to do them then I had an epiphany they take less than a minuet each now, take a magic marker put on the edge and draw round

I like your build, It's coming out superb. Well done :-))

I love the weathering and the colour of the wheels, it all works so well and the street filth is just right :-)) A true opus of your work Ken.

Hi all next update, started the London taxi, I must say I'm a bit disappointed (not the kit it's good enough) it's just I could have knocked it out in a day easily, it is a VERY simple kit, yes it looks like a London taxi but maybe if it had a full engine or maybe the door handles were separate parts, I don't know what they could have done but it really is a simple kit.The kit is rated skill level 3 personally I think it should be level 1.

Anyway I've also started the Italari phantom 2 rolls royce (I've spent the same amount of time on this so you can see the difference) the taxi only needs the glass and body on half an hour, let dry add decals done in 2 hrs

Hi all well the taxi is finished (definitely not skill level 3 as the instructions suggest) I could easily done it in a day.

Morning Ken,
Would you like to keep your builds under separate thread titles. ? This would make them easier to find for interested parties
I can relocate them if you like.
Cheers
ken
-
Very kind of you, i was just building them all on here as they are all part of the dio, or will be when complete.
-
All your detailing looks superb but i particularly like the bus...it looks real...fantastic job :-))
-
Hi all well i didn't like mk1 so here's mk2

Hi all here is the next update, I've got to say this is THE very first kit I've ever built with no decals, not even for the dash a kit with a few disappointments the colours have codes at the start of the instructions but that is the only mention of them so apart from the box art there is no mention of what colour anything should be. Anyway here is where I am now.

Hi all well the roller is finished, going to shelve this dio for a while as I'm starting to just chuck them together just to finish them and I'm not giving it my best so will come back to it when I feel more like doing it justice

You have got on well with the project so far Ken, and some of those pieces are not quick builds. I would include the 'Cardis' in that group as you found out having to build two to get the second one spot on. A change is as good as a rest as they say:O)

Hi all here's the next update I made the break and fuel lines out of stripped network wires
(http://i63.tinypic.com/f3hlcx.jpg)
I much prefer larger scales, I mean look how small this engine is
(http://i63.tinypic.com/20hatg2.jpg)
Compared to this
(http://i66.tinypic.com/27xe6p0.jpg)
Those window blind slats are 4 inches (approximately 100 mill)
How you guys add so much detail to 1/24 kits I take my hat off to you.

I have seen the lanyards in period promotional films and wondered how easy they were to accidently tug whilst the car was in motion causing the door to open :((

My mums first car was a Mini Countryman the one with the wood on the outside. Its registration number was 773 EUK and it had the pull cords in the doors for opening them.

Just picked up on this thread! I must say its a brilliant idea, and is certainly something completely different
What a great job you are doing/

Hi all another update thanks for the replies, mate as you say my sister did just that (maybe that's why I remember them) luckily she was about six and my dad wasn't going that quick but the air was blue, I remember the countryman. Thanks rottweilier

Hi all starting the range rover(given to me by polux) the exhausts are moulded into the floor pan so I've tried cutting them out to make them look more like pipes than how they look now.

Hi all here's the next update still not finished the theatre also I tried printing the police stripes on transfer paper but didn't work very well so I am trying masking it up instead.

Hi all more done on the theatre I'm contemplating adding lights above the STALLS and upper CIRCLE doors, unsure yet soon have to actually start the base as nearly all the car models done, still a long way to go though all the street furniture, which reminds me of another problem, I was going to have all the buildings and fountain removable to make for easier storage as this thing will be huge but what to do about the traffic lights and whatnot.
That is going to be one very big problem.

Hi all I need some help here I bought some printer transfer paper to make my own decals I've printed off some police decals for the range rover. The ink seems to not soak into the paper (almost like rain on gloss paintwork) the first pic is the best of 6
(http://i64.tinypic.com/161c8s2.jpg)
Also the decals when applying them are very stretchy
(http://i66.tinypic.com/w6vsn.jpg)
I think the decals won't notice when the car is applied to the dio but I would like to know where I'm going wrong.
-
Did you get the correct decal paper? You need the inkjet paper and not the laser.
Alternatively did you set the paper type correctly in printer setup.? Inkjets need to apply less ink on non porous types of paper, if there is no option for decal paper try using transparency setting.
Jim

Thanks for the info.

Hi all nearly finished the range rover next up will be the transit van, I've still to make the police sign for the roof and assorted sundries like the wing mirrors and wipers got loads more work to do on the buildings not even started any street furniture I'm hoping the finished dio will be an impressive site. I've realised I've got to make loads of figures for the street as well (not something I'm looking forward to. I reckon I must have been on this one for a yr by now and I can easily see it taking that long again.

For getting decals to sit on the surface like a skin, there is a product caled decal setting solutions available that gently dissolve the backing film so
the decal settles into the surface detail like real paint would. Humbrol do it and there is an american company that make a twin set of decalsolve and decalset. I do not know if it works on home printed decals though :O/
Looking good though. If you want your street furniture removable, could you make the bottom of them as plugs so you can just plug them into your wiring and then pull them out to store when dismantling the diorama? The base of the lamp posts could be built around jack plug sockets if made a little looser fit than normal.
-
Hi all well I've nearly finished the cops car so I thought it was time to start the robbers van, it's going to be my favourite style old and beat up.
I wanted to show the scrapes and scratches on the bed of the van so I thought I would use the same method I used for the dent on the Honda tank and the dent in the fender of the traction avant.
I covered the floor pan with foil.
Sprayed it with the body colour then stained and scratched through to the foil.
I've started scruffying up the body.
Tried the floor pan in the body to see the effect
(http://i66.tinypic.com/2gum876.jpg)
I may go further with the wear and tear on the transit, a few dents or maybe more rust but I'm happy with where it's going at the moment.
-
Hi all well I've dirtied up the bottom and started ageing the interior of the transit I think it's a great little kit although I would have liked a full engine more.
