Title: Brixham harbour
Post by: 6705russell on August 12, 2007, 10:09:53 am

Russ

Looks like some sort of stabilised platform. Is the black machinery a pump of some sort? The whole thing looks very clean for a pumping unit, but who knows?

Lucky you in Devon

Cheers

Hi Doug,

The black thing is actually a Hiab crane? Does that help?

Thats what i thought?  I was wondering if it had two legs just for stabilisation but it was only equipped with a crane.

With two only legs and a crane it could some sort of temporary dock - the legless end moored to the bank or a barge. Is the boat alongside part of the setup, if so what does the lettering say? is it a company name or just the name of the boat?

Doug, the name on the boat was SOILIDARITY which i think was the name of the boat not the company.

Just tried blowing it up (not literally !) and none the wiser. It is railed on three sides and a nice rubbing bar on the front so whatever happens must happen there, but then you have the Hiab stuck right in the middle. ??? Fancy another trip to the seaside, Russ & see if you can find somebody to put us out of our misery  ;D ;D

I go down to Brixham 2 or 3 times a month and i have never seen that boat moored up next to the platform so i suspect the two come as a package?

Unfortunately, not there when I went last. Have to find an excuse to pop out from my nephew's wedding next month  ::)

You could take the picture and ask aound the dock, maybe.   ;D

Does it look as if it could be dragged by the red boat ?

Perhaps it could be like a car trailer.  Put down the two legs and hold the platform and boat together.  'Parked up',  as it were.

Only a guess, you understand.

I live in Brixham and am doing the Bismarck and Snowberry, so I read this page sometimes.
What do you need pictures of?
Always need an excuse to go to the Hole in the Wall for a pint, which a stones throw from the harbour.

It looks like a work platform, to me. The legs are called spuds and are used to locate and stabilise the platform in position. They are used most commonly on dredgers. but all so on work platforms when cranes and piling vibrators are in use.

Hi all,
As the legs are fitted to the crane end, perhaps they are just to stop the work platform crane end from submerging when it is lifting what ever it lifts.
