After making up my mind to have ago at doing a miniature, I settled on Bob Wilson's Arran Mail Boat from the 1930's.
I have had some problems posting photos, but got this one, so here it is. Since taking the shot, I decided I was not happy with the main superstructure so have redone it. I hope to have more photos soon. Today I built the mast and boom and am very pleased with them.

Very nice :-))
Shouldn't you use a parker pen %%

What and get accused of plaggggggerism......or whatever.. %%
This is an earlier shot after the hull had been carved.

These shots were taken today and show where the model is upto. None of the parts are attached to the deck yet. Much to do before then. I must say it really is great fun, learning new ways to do things.......very small.

very nice model Footski.
I will follow this one with great interest.

I decided to have a go at building the base and case. This I should a shot of progress up to this morning. Sorry about the poor focus...None of the deck fittings are secured....Plenty of time for that.

That is looking very smart! The advantage of miniatures is that they don't cost much, don't take up much space and can be as detailed as you want them to be. And, most important, you are not confined to what kit manafacturers want you to build. There are loads of plans to be found in books and old shipping journals.

Disaster has struck! The case has been confined to the Rubbish......I removed the plastic covering on the plexiglass too early and when I came to clean it up, there were traces of superglue showing and small scratches on the surfaces. A tough lesson to learn, but I will not accept my stupidity, so......back to the workroom and this time more patience and care is needed.... >>:-( .
Still loving the journey....

Superglue has a nasty habit of running. That is why I glue the perspex case together with Evo-Stik contact adhesive. It can be very stringy, but does not run. But your base beading should be OK to fit with some new perspex. It can be very easy to miss scratches that go through the protective coating, and there is nothing worse than finding them at the last stage of case construction. On one occasion, I was convinced that I had checked each panel so thoroughly that there was not a single scratch anywhere. When I peeled the backing off, I found a flaw in the front panel in the form of a jet black spot within the actual panel itself! :((

Bob,
I am glad I am not on my own. Still, I know the second attempt will be better. I will also use contact adhesive, but was not sure it would work properly!
-
More progress. The second case has been completed, this time using contact adhesive and the plastic covering has been left on until ready. A few more bits have been added to the boat and the sea has been completed, albeit, not the best.

Interesting build Footski!
-
Deceptively detailed Footski. it may be small but you have lots happening on board :-)) I was going to suggest you get some acrylic textuing gel and sculpt some waves on the perspex saving you having to re make the base, but you got on with it before I read your topic!

That gel actually sounds great, but not for this model at this stage. Thanks for the suggestion....

Hi Footski - yes, lots of changes - sent you a pm, regards, mike

That is looking very smart - well done. Arran Mail is an excellent choice for a first miniature. You can find lots of images of the actual ship by doing a Google search.
