Title: New Build underway - 1:48 scale Castle Class Corvette
Post by: David_l_perry on September 27, 2016, 10:10:54 pm
Well...inspired by seeing one of these at the Haydock Model boat show, I managed to track down a hull from David Metcalfe and its just arrived today with a full set of scale plans

This is a first scratch build for me, so going to be lots of interesting learning, but having done several model slipway kits and other stuff, I don't feel too daunted by it at the moment.....

And as we all like photos here are the first shots of the hull..... :-)

Been collecting lots of photos over the last month, and sorted out a great supply of Styrene sheet from the boat club I have just joined.

First step will be sorting out a decent stand and getting the internal bulkheads in place to stiffen up the hull - hopefully make a proper start this weekend....

I'll be attempting a Castle class "sometime in the future" as well. For now, I'll be content to follow your build and hope to pick up some tips along the way.

At 1/48 scale - what is the LOA of your hull please ?

Regards,

Ray.

I love your split workstation! Very tidy, suspiciously so  :-) Seriously though, these will be interesting topics to follow, the hull is a lovely swept shape, almost racebuilt in look.

Hull is about 1600mm long and beam 270mm.

It was after seeing this one at Haydock, and after finishing my 1:72 flower class corvette that I decided that I wanted to try a bigger ship.

What I liked about this was it was a fair, but still manageable size, but due to its scale, the detailing side of things should hopefully be a little less fiddly.

I have really enjoyed the Model slipway stuff I had done and hopefully all the styrene and detail work will stand me well when I come to start on this.

My workstation is my main place of work at home as well...so It has to be kept relatively clean all the time...but the divider between the two spaces stops overspill from one space into another  :D

Thank you for sharing. :-)

This will be the first of many questions I feel.....

Been looking over the plans and cant work out what the hatched areas are for on the rear deck.   Its looks to be far too big to be an anti slip and struggling to work out what it would be for , and also why it would only be on the lower rear deck and the top of the centre rear small bit of superstructure.

I found this photo and again, the real thing looks far too big to be anti slip but its clearly shown as the drawing above, albeit perhaps a little smaller pattern.  Is it something to help discharge water to to the sides...??? just cant work it out

The foredeck also shows lines that I can see on a number of models and photos, but again, cant work out what it would actually be for ??

Any body shed any light on this ???

Only wish I could find some larger resolution images

The criss cross on the back is anti slip...

It was metal blocks welded to the deck and they were
Pretty big. Before you start have a look at John Haynes's build as he did
It in his. Also decide what ship you are building some never had the anti slip
Tread and others had it in rows parallel to the keel

There  Is a book on the castle class corvettes which has some good pictures

David,

This is how this was handled on the boat I have - I didn't build it so cannot be sure of the source of the textured material. It appears to be a hard plastic sheet that was used.

Maybe someone on the forum will recognise the grey diagonal line plastic sheet material and can point you in the right direction for supply should you wish to go this route.

that on the aft deck looks a lot like checker plate Plasticard that can be bought from Evergreen  :-))

Thanks for the info guys !   I have a book on the castle class corvettes to pick up tomorrow from the post office and hopefully I will have a few more detailed shots to go off before I decide what to do.  Will check out the styrene sheet for the pattern.

Time for an update with pictures

The vast majority of the superstructure is all built up.  I got all the styrene sheets from The club I belong (North West Scale Model Boat Club)

I am really enjoying building all this up form the plans and reference photos I have.  Looking at other builds has also been very helpful.   Every picture I found has a slightly different layout, only minor changes, but it has helped me at least work out most of the layout.

Main front Gun Platform with Servo mounted to add a little movement for the gun

This week I built the majority of the side supports for the gun platforms

Also Added the first of many Bollards

I made a template for the ladders and once done, building the ladders up was a fairly quick process

Very little cleaning up was required

I ordered the armament package from Battlecraft - with the corrected number of mortar throwers - This is one of the few items that I decided not to make, as the detail is superb

David, be extremely proud of your work so far. :-))

I echo all the compliments that have been posted so far, and am in awe of your skills and workstation tidiness.

Very well done Sir and agree with your synopsis of "BATTLECRAFTS", their work too is exemplary..

Sandy.

Hi
here is how to make cable drums from snap fasteners :-) as mentioned on Facebook posting :-)

You will require 15mm diameter poppers/press studs
