Hi,
Does anyone know whether the Deans KYTE Motors could be interchanged with the MFA 385?

Hi, there are several different Kyte motors, which one are you thinking of? Alternately, what model and prop is it for?

We haven't a Missouri in our club so I don't have direct experience of the model. I use 2 385s in a smaller cruiser, but, good as they are I wouldn't choose them for a 54 inch model.
I'm not sure how many motors you are going to choose, if it's 2 I would consider 2 550 motors. Low ish reving and torquey. They also have a wide voltage range so getting the right speed should be easy. Don't confuse them with 540s, they are very different.
You won't need a lot of power, but you will need torque, to get it moving well. The props will be important.
I seem to remember Glyn Guest using a 550 in his Sheffield to very good effect, that was similar in size.

Fitting 550 motors may be a problem. The shafts will be at a very shallow angle which may give problems with alignment.When I had a 1/200 Yamato around 54 inch it was powered by 4 motors about the same size of 385 and the model sailed very well with a good turn of speed.I have the Missouri kit and it will be powered using 385 motors driving 4 shafts.These are my thoughts on this post only.I have no wish to Influence your final choice of motors

The problem with " about the same size" is that it covers too many variables. 380 and 385 motors are the same size, and as different as you can get. If alignment is a problem, I would choose a belt drive.

Hi RNLI having checked the mayhem site numerous conversations have been done on the 1.200 scale Yamato. All have been fitted with 385 motors hope this helps. The Missouri is about the same size fitted with some decent props from a well known supplier I think you will have no problems. Again I have no wish to influence the choice of motor or props to fit to this model. See Mayhem Oct 28 2012

I have yet to come across a bad 385 motor. As long as you request a '5 Pole' type of motor, you will end up with a medium power motor, which, x4 should be fine for a 1/200 scale warship of this size.

Just moving along with my Missouri what shafts to use, im tempted with 2mm shafts as 4mm seems a bit overscale, any thoughts? and propeller choices?

I have this for a future build and I will be using 2mm shafts I think the max length you can use is about 12in. My props and shafts came from Model Boat Bits 2 4 bladed props 2 5 bladed props. I have used 2mm shafts on my Elco conversation with no problems. Some extra support may be needed for external shafts inside the hull hope this helps.
