Title: Bow Thruster

I have fitted a bow thruster to my new Oakgarth MMM tug and have it set up on  aspeed controller. In one direction its fine but there is a hesitation when swithing from one side to the other?

My other tug has one fitted on microswitches, full on etc.

Whats the best method, esc or direct?

I found that connecting onto two micro switches with a servo arm operating the two works best but i had two washer motors connected.

You use the force of the water via the pump, not a prop then? Did not think of that!

Some speed controllers - particularly those shown in the photos of Russ's boat - are based on car ESCs and will have a delay between switching from what they "see" as Forward and Reverse. You could either use a type which was actually designed for model boat applications, or use two micro-switches............or wait a couple of months and see what the market has to offer then...... nudge, nudge, wink, wink.  ;)

Sorry for any confusion, the speed controllers are nothing to do with the bow thrusters they are for the drives, the thrusters are operated on the swithces only, 12 volt. They suck in through the small tube and blow out of the bigger one.

   do you get alot of side thrust with the water pump thruster???
i've never seen this type of set up before :-\

Very powerful, to be honest i have never used another setup like the Robbe or Graupner but i had these in my Norderney which was very weighty and the pumps pushed it very well.

Very interesting, mate. Can you be a real gent and supply some more info, please? What sort of washers pumps do you use? Where did you get them? Were they new? How much were they? Do they run from 12v? Do you know what sort of current they take?

PM me if you can. Dry technical data can get very tedious in open forum.

BTW I know the ESCs in the piccy have nowt to do with the bow thruster - I just referred to the picture so that I didn't have to use the M word!

If anyone wants washer pumps i come across loads of them in my job, i was going to use a double action one for the monitors.
Really powerfull.

Or if you want more power use a headlight washer pump, but be carefull!
