I am maybe thinking about a tank, use it around the house when lakeside isn't available through the winter..
From what I can make out, the tanks around the £100-300 mark seem to have two speeds? and those in the £500-£1000 range have variable speeds......is that a good analogy?
I would like one to have variable speed, ie through a speed controller, are the cheaper ones modifiable?
Is there a better cheaper one to try?
Christmas is coming, and my wife need a nudge in the right direction... :-))

Tamiya or heng long both make decent takes.
I have a friend in Whiteley that has a tamiya leapard for sale rtr

You could always bench the tug and build a LCM too that would be good.
Will drop down the lake in the morning and let you know :-))

We have a large number of 1/16 tanks within the display team, ranging from basic Heng Long tanks, up to the Tamiya models. I would suggest looking at the Tankzone website. I have been dealing with them for some time and they offer a very good service. With complete models, plus many upgrade parts also.
The 27mhz Heng Longs are mostly phased out now and have been replaced with 2.4G versions, a bit more expensive, but worth spending extra for the improved reliability.
You can buy upgrade electronics by Clarke, available through Tankzone. These units start about £76 and replace all the onboard electronics with an improved control and sound system. You need to use a Tx and Rx of your choice at the same time.
Tamiya, you get what you pay for with Tamiya. Everyone should have at least one full option Tamiya model in their life at some time, I have, and regretted getting rid of it. Mind you, the clarke upgrades give you, as far as I am concerned, an 85% Tamiya spec for roughly 50% of the cost.
Horses for courses, it's all down to how much you want to spend, as well as how often you want to use the model.

Cheers for that unbuiltnautilus, might have to pop down one day and check them out soon.

Well, both the tanks and their members are mostly put to bed for the winter, so please check first before travelling.
Checkout Portsmouth Model Boat Display Team Armoured Division on Facebook for updates on forthcoming displays, plus many photos of previous events, plus some nicely painted tanks...not all done by me %)

Hey niva, I've quite afew tanks Tamiya and other makes that I could be persuaded to sell, hit me up with a PM with what sort of thing you're after
Here's what I have
-
Its a 'Tiger' chassis but made into a WW1 tank, the side armament is designed to fire black powder, which is a lot more impressive than firing little bits of plastic!

Very nice shipworm, very nice indeed.

if you do opt for a heng long tank.. even if going for the "premium range", swap out the gearbox for a unit with "metal gears" even the premium jobbys only use zinc gears and these too are almost as weak as plastic gear train, especially when "tank steer" comes in to play. I uprated one from the start and has never been a problem, the other i bought as premium range and ended up swapping out the gearbox when a drive gear lost its teeth. Moreso if you also opt for metal tracks... dont go for the tracks with seperate rubber blocks. no matter what glue you use, a few turns and the blocks twist out again, so go for tracks with blocks built in and simply paint on the black/rubbery bits.

Well after a lot of deliberation, I have decided to change route slightly.
I have asked my good lady for a rock crawler for christmas and have settled on a Tamiya Mitsubishi Shogun rally.
Ity will be painted mettallic orange and gunmetal lower parts...and will eventually be made to drive slower than rally made..
Many thanks for the replies lads, much appreciated
