Dear all
A question.. SS Yongala, built on the Tyne 1903. Need of some cross sections?
In search of a new project I have decided to take a try at building the SS Yongala. It was a ship that was built on the Tyne and sent to Australia for the passenger trip from Adelaide through to Cairns in the north. In 2012 it was the Australian titanic, of a sorts. She sailed into a cyclone and went down off Townsville. There was a champion racehorse on the deck in a wooden box called Moonshine, and after I think three weeks its head washed ashore on Magnetic Island, which is one of the most beautiful spots on earth. She wasn’t found until the 50’s when she was discovered in the shipping lane in 35 meters of water, festooned with coral and sea life. The gropers are enormous!

My interest is that it is a diving spot and I have dived it and found it magical. The best dive of my life. Also my wife is a writer and has a book published in Germany which has the sinking of the Yongala as a terrific plot twist. (We plotted this together, and I always get ships into her romances).

So the museum has sent me the plans they have. Not bad, but they don’t have the cross sections. I can get away without them, but I am hoping someone may have some of a similar ship, as she was a Tyne built ship.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I have attached the plans (shrunk) sent from Townsville Museum.
Cheers John

Have you tried an email to, or searching, https://twarchives.org.uk. They have a lot of plans for ships built on the River Tyne. She was built by Sir WG Armstrong Whitworth & Co.
The builders model was apparently given to the town of Yongala in 1957. The model was in a Glass case and was/is seven foot long.
There was a sister ship too, the Grantala, also owned by the Adelaide Steamship Company.

John......in answer to a 'similar' vessel, our Float a Boat have plans for the 'TSS Yulgibar' and as used on the Queensland trade...
Yuligbar was a Clyde built vessel built in 1907 .....certainly smaller in size and displacement although you will see she has certain similarities ............Derek
