Title: Thunder tiger Volans trimaran
Post by: Charles1 on November 04, 2016, 08:30:03 pm
I have just acquired a second hand thunder tiger Volans trimaran fitted with a hitec drum winch it does not seem up to the job the sheeting lines come off the drum and gets tangled up  thinking of replacing it with a double arm winch only trouble is the hull is very narrow anybody  got any ideas.?

Visit your local fishing tackle shop and buy a reel of thin elastic.  Fasten a length between your jib sheet inner and the forestay deck mount so that it is just under tension when the jib is fully out.  This will create tension from the winch drum and stop your line spooling off.
Cheers

Slightly off topic, maybe wrong in which I apologise but if you are new to yachts bear in mind a trimaran if blown over won't self right and some form of rescue is needed.Good sailing..

Hi Charles
Hope a picture is worth a thousand words!
These show the sails fully OUT, with the elastic at its least tension.  When you bring them in, both beads move back pulling the sheets in  with the elastic keeping the tension on the winch line.

Cheers

hi have built a fusion 40 crusing cat had the same prob so i built a long plate winch at one end pully at the other sitting under the deck mine gose across the hulls but have seen them go along the length using a double drum and a spring to connect in /out lines this keeps tension on the winch then connect sheets to this make sure the plate is long enough to sheet in fully hope this might help O0
