Hello!
Was there any specific prototype when Caldercraft constructed their iconic Northlight kit? I am just curious, particularly because the rubbing strakes seem to be rather atypical for a clyde puffer.

it is in their blurb that it is representative of the Puffer ilk. Not based on a particular vessel. Nemesis

Are you referring to historical "puffers", or the later VIC's which were NOT puffers at all, just Victualing Inshore Craft, similar in shape to "puffers". It was a VIC that was used in the later Para Handy episodes on the BBC .

I think there is enough talk about puffers and
Pseudo puffers on here.
Puffers stopped puffing when condensers were fitted to enable them to venture out of the
Canal into salt water.

Most true puffers were built between 1856-1938 and built at different yards around the Clyde River, and as such, like many vessels of particular similar use such as trawlers, no two were the same in build statistics other than their length of 66', and that is why te Caldercraft boat is classed as a "typical" puffer.there is nothing more sinister than that.

I have just completed my Puffer and am quite pleased with the outcome. The components are quite good but do need a bit of fettling but this is what our hobby is about. This is my third Caldercraft build so am used to their quality and sparse instructions. As usual for Caldercraft you need to have your thinking cap on as the A0 plan and the 'instruction book' do not match up but of course they do expect you to have a little bit of experience in model building. It has taken me about 6 months to build working on and off over this time. It has a large hull which is easy to house the motor, ESC, RC and batteries, etc. (I installed 2 lead acid 6 volt batteries, one on each side amidships) which gives stability and ballast. Being a large deep hull it needs a lot of ballast, even in its short length.I have only tested her in the big white nautical test facility at home so do not know how it will perform on our lake but hope to try it out on Sunday if the weather is set fair.

Incidentally, you might be interested to know that whilst Ross and Marshall Ltd. (1879-1999) of Gourock named many of their puffers with a suffix 'Light' such as Stormlight, Dawnlight, Starlight etc I have been unable to locate a 'Northlight' ever being owned by them and in my puffer records, there is no record of any 'Northlight' anywhere so Caldercraft made it up.

Thanks for that info. My other 2 Caldercraft builds, Alte Liebe and Westbourne were models of actual boats that had very interesting histories in real life. It took me some time to search and trawl the internet for information but in the end I did get their histories - pity about Northlight though.

PS Livesteam - thanks for your comments much appreciated. I have taken many photos of this build as I do with my other boats and it is good to see how she had grown following taking the contents out of the box on day one.
