Title: Measuring Bulkheads etc?
Post by: tizdaz on November 18, 2016, 04:52:17 am
Hi guys :)

My Hull is GRP & i want to re-inforce it using wooden bulkheads, whats the easiest/best method to get the correct size/shape so they fit snug?

Same for the deck to, should i use some cardboard as a template? and is the best method for deck to lay down a piece of cardboard large enough then get the hull and place it face down onto the cardboard & then draw a line all the way around on the cardboard?

Should i make templates using cardboard or ?

Any info or tips for muchos appreciated as always :)

Thanks guys/gals :)

there are some handy gadgets around that will "measure profile contours" if you put that in Google you will see what I mean...
there are other ways, for example if you have a strip of roofing lead, you can force it into the Hull and it will follow the contours, making templates out of cardboard or thick paper is always a good idea .. !!

Doing half profiles would mean you could use a smaller gauge for the bulkheads.

You could use a flexible curve such as this
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Helix-60cm-Flexible-Curves-U46010/dp/B002HRAB6C (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Helix-60cm-Flexible-Curves-U46010/dp/B002HRAB6C)
It's a decent length and will hold the shape to get the contour.

See Jerry's steam launch wear, on page 3 of steam. Reply number 107 for the correct method of marking out for a bulkhead.
Good luck
Jerry.

Will you need bulkheads?
Andy's hulls are fairly rigid
heavyweight layup.
By the time you have fitted
a beamshelf and deck beams
you should have a very rigid
set up.

hi guys :)

I wasn't too sure whether I needed to fit bulkheads or not, but I've decided on fitting 4 as they will also be used to place a base onto for the electrics/motor/batteries etc :)

I always fit bulkheads just in case of accidents and water ingress and to stop the water sloshing and causing a capsize and damaging every electronic component on board.

Also, spare volumes can be filled with foam to make it completely unsinkable - easier to retrieve a dead boat still on the surface rather than at the bottom of a muddy lake.
