Well, ive been thinking about how to get the correct shape of bulkheads for my fibreglass hull, then came across this:

Basically its a bendy ruler that holds its shape so you can form the shape then place it onto the surface you want to copy it to, theres different lengths to choose from (this one is 60cm as thats the best size for my use and costs just under £7.50) but they go upto 100cm in length :)

My tug is pretty large so this will make it much simpler to make bulkheads which have a snug fit hopefully! ..im sure it will also come in very handy for other parts of my build!

Before computers came along with Cadcam drawing facilities we used to use these everyday for technical drawings. This was when talented people were called Draftsmen and used various width ink pens rather than pencils. Great tool; I'm sure I've got some old one's in my mums loft somewhere

known in the technical drawing/drafting/architectural trade as "flexible French curves".

That is far more practical :-)) :-)) and allows for tighter curves at keel positions O0 O0 where the flexible curves don't cut it.

I still use mine for copying hull-shapes for boat-stands. I have had it for over 40 years when I used it to make hundreds of sketch-plans of bends in roads in road traffic accident investigations! Good value!

I was actually thinking of using some thick gauge copper wire, but in the end decided to get the bendy ruler, it should do the trick hopefully as my hull is fairly large so there shouldn't be any tight bends that could cause an issue :)

My (third) one is in regular use. Beware of springback, and do cut trial pieces out of cardboard before committing to wood.

Yes, hence why Martins solution is the way to go :-)) :-))
I have three, different lengths, but don't use them for 'keel' shapes.

I was always taught at school by a Professor of Mathematics, and it has stuck with me all my life..........
A ruler is a person that oversees the running of a country or nation, such as our Queen.
A rule is used for measuring lengths of lines, and objects etc.
A flexible French Curve is, sadly, neither and certainly NOT a bendy ruler <*< .

tizdaz.........with or without the ruler...I am guessing that you have started some 13 differing thread Q&A's..... but essentially all about your one proposed build %)
From this I could only conclude that you have each and every one of these threads in an EXCEL spread sheet so you can keep track of both your wide and varied questions, but also the responses from our members
Naturally members without access to this cross reference listing may be a little disinterested in understanding the 13 differing threads
Conversely, some members may be interested in reading a singular blog....from go to wo :-))

Yes, that teaching made it all the way to Sydney, New South Wales, where we were constanly reminded, no you can't have a three foot ruler but you can borrow a three foot rule.
In the drawing class it was scale rules not scale rulers.

Hiya Derek,
Im just posting in the correct sections, so if people are searching for particular subjects, it makes it easier to find than having 1 topic covering all subjects, i just use the "Show new replies" easy to keep track , no excel or spreadsheets needed at all, cheers anyway :-)
But also, could you imagine if i had just 1 topic and posted all 13 subjects and questions that i have posted in that topic, and then members would reply to different questions all over the place in same topic, then yup, i agree.. EXCEL would be needed, amd even then it would still be messy! :-)
Should have just sent this via message as its no relevance to the topic in hand!

When you clouted around the ear with a 12" steel rule for saying ruler instead of rule it tends to stick. The joys of having no PC correct apprenticeships...........you learn the hard way.
I try correcting my son who calls it a ruler, so do all his teachers.............I give up cos you can't hit them now................. <*< <*< <*< <*< <*<

It wasn't only at school.
When you went to buy, say a three foot boxwood folding ruler, the salesman would say, "sorry haven't got any". O0 O0
When pointing to one just bought by the person next to you, the reply was "Oh yes, we do have three foot boxwood folding rules do you want one" <*< <*<

No mention of the good old slide rule. Still got mine from when I did my HNC. Made byAristo Simplex and the markings are badly worn.
