This is basically addressed to those who might remember me.
I'be been adrift for a few years now mainly due to an incurable and degenerative eye condition.
Even though my eyesight is worse now, my recent purchase of an Apple iPad 2 Pro with the 13" Retina screen has given me a new lease of life.
When I completed building the Admirals Barge (whenever that was), I'd already realised that my years of model shipbuilding were at an end. Soon after that, so were my car driving days behind me.
Luckily, I can still open a tin of McEwans!
My interest in early to mid 20 th century merchant ships remains as strong as ever and so I'be been able to help out others ( Ashen asked) with plans and so on.
But what to do with my models was the big question. But the first thing to go was my replica 1954 MG TF.
I pondered long an hard about the fate of the models. I really didn't want to sell any of them. Rightly or wrongly, I just didn't fancy them simply becoming a way for unknown people to use them as a means of making a monetary profit.
So I decided to simply give them away.
Shortly after I made that decision I found out that Brian Chambers had become very involved with the new North Shields Fishing and Heritage museum. I was invited down to have a look. I was pretty stunned by the sheer professionalism of the place and immediately knew that I'd found a home for at least 2of the models. The trawler "James Cullen" and the Tyne ferry "Northumbrian". Things moved on from there and now Brian has custody of most of my other models that are now regularly exhibited in the museum.
Similarly, I've given all my machines and tools to people who I believe will most benefit from them.
I feel very content within myself with these decisions. Regards to you all. Bryan Young.

Great to hear from you again Bryan. I think quite a few of us wondered how you were getting on. I don't think we will forget your superb models in a hurry.
Really pleased to hear that your models are finding a good home where they will be appreciated in the years to come. I don't think you could have made a better choice.

Well,well.....how nice of you to respond Colin. Apart from the already stated problems, there are ( of course) those common to all 76 year olds! Still, we get by one way or another.
Are you still "connected" to "Model Boats"? Perhaps retired by now....the passing of another era!
Like me and the RFA ...it was another life happening to someone else.

Still doing a bit for Model Boats Bryan and even some model making.
Other priority is doing a bit of travelling while we still can - two weeks driving round Nova Scotia this year plus trips to Greece and Holland.

Well thank you Peter. But you must be the first of your breed to put an iPad ahead of a preference for a beer! I always knew that you lot had little taste when it came to choosing friends.
For example....the first 4 answered I received were all from Aussie! What a crew!!! Bryan.

A small addition to my open letter.....
I had to stop earlier because neither time nor tide will stop Mrs Y plonking the evening meal on the table at 20.00 hrs.
As far as "my" models go, BrianC has custody of the cable ships Recorder and Norseman plus Hunan and Baroda. Another pal has the Admirals Barge but is also a friend of the museum. I'm keeping Bluebird of Chelsea as a future gift to my grandson.

It is good to hear what you have done with your models. You have always been generous with your knowledge and resources, now you are doing the same with your models :-)) It is also great that the new iPad technology is serving you well.
Here is a tip I can share with you to at least return the compliment. Some days my finger joints hurt, and opening a ring pull can of beer can be painful; but the screw tops on the whisky bottles are much easier. O0

We really have missed you and your knowledge. I particularly liked your tales of your shipping career and advice on model construction which is still on here for all to read.

Well its nice to have me old sparring partner back , hope you are keeping well. It's hard to believe it was 2014 when you last posted something.
Last but not least, in that time the Forum has had a few crashes and some of our photographs have gone astray - so best check. Also, did you manage to refurbish the last vessel which you had stolen?

Oh dear...I had no idea that I had been elevated to the rank of Pontiff.
But if,in my declining years, I've realised anything at all it is that pointless arguements get nobody anywhere. That only proves the truth about the traditional seamanship argument.....A flat stem entertainment followed by a flat denial followed by personal abuse.
I'll accept an honourary Diocese though. BY.

Sorry to hear your driving and modelling days are over, but at least the ring pulling finger is working ! Just think if it was still the days of Tennents with those pop bottle caps and the top end spanner !
If I ever get back up Tyneside again I will make a point of finding the museum and having a look at my rice bowl in the Tynesider's wheelhouse !

Aha! I wondered how long it would take for steam-boat Mickey to huff and puff his way into view waving his tattered Saltire.
I've already ordered my mitre, but as crooks are not readily available in this neck of the woods, I was going to ask if any were available in the lowland of Caledonia.
However, as your comments were marginally less acerbic than usual (no doubt that will change when "normal" service is resumed. BY.

Your bowl of porridge is still there, but may need re-heating by now. I really enjoyed making that model, but if it's possible, I've been even more gratified by the public reaction to it. Of course the build time could have been halved if if BarryM (stand-by first as was) and I hadn' t got carried away with the private lives of the passengers!
As far as driving and model making are concerned, well, what will be will be and it's no good just bleating about it. But as I mentioned earlier, this large screen iPad has proved to be a lifesaver....my original 7" screen version can't hold a candle to it. So all in all, I just take each day as it comes.....I forgot to mention that watching TV on the new machine is lifesaver no.2. Bryan.
