Title: Crew Rescue using rocket launched Breeches Buoy from 1963

If you have a look at this - a ship was wrecked on the shores of the River Tyne in 1963 and my dear late dad was involved in the rescue - working on the Breeches Buoy - he was passing when the event unfolded here in South Shields. I remember going to visit the wreck when it had all quietened down. The wreck itself was actually broken up on the foreshore as they couldn't float the vessel. All the crew were saved but the thing to look for are the waves breaking on the side of the ship - bearing in mind this is inside a 'closed' harbour. Very rough sea indeed that day.

Saw wor hoose ower the watter a couple of times though :-)

Post by: John W E on December 18, 2016, 04:37:10 pm: hi there Ray, do you recall this one - your side of the water - she had just left Smiths Docks after a major refit. They cut the hull in half if I remember rightly and put a 'moon pool' in -

When she went out for trials there was either an engine/rudder failure and she ended up on the Black Middens, Tynemouth and I believe there was a tug beached as well.

Post by: Capt Podge on December 18, 2016, 10:25:13 pm: Yep, definitely remember that scene - we couldn't get near the rocks while this was going on therefore we had to learn to dig lugworm from the beach. Our usual ragworm supply had the boats sitting on top of it. O0

Post by: nemesis on December 19, 2016, 11:54:09 am: Remember this incident quite well. We were there when the booms of the big crane collapsed when trying to lift the back end of the ship. Did it on a falling tide and the crane bottomed out. Big panic as that boat had to be got off, I was told that it went back to sea with the lump of rock still under the engine, nemesis

I remember when I first started as a coastie in the mid 80's, watching a rocket line being fired. No elf 'n' safety back then. This thing took off then decided it was a 'coastie seeker' and headed back towards us. Never seen as many people run for cover.. except me!! as I hadn't quite grasped what was going on.
