Title: 6v SLA (24 volt total?)
Post by: tizdaz on January 03, 2017, 02:39:30 am
Hi guys,

Im going to be using 4x 6v batterys wired up to give total output 24volt, however ive read that a fully charged SLA can pump out more than its stated voltage. The ESC i was going to use was one from Action Electronics which supports upto 30volt which would mean i'd have no probs at all, only thing is it has been out of stock for past few months & its now halting my build so i've been looking around for another ESC & one i've seen is the Mtroniks HV which states upto 24 volt...and there's my problem! ..does anyone know if its a strict 24volt & no more, or would it be safe it went over a few volts?

Any info much appreciated!

thanks :)

Daz........if you were happy with the technical workings of the ACTion ESC........

You are still months away before you will need to connect  <*< electricity.........

A call to Component Shop may reveal that Dave & Ms Lizzie are on a river cruise  :o.......however I am sure the stock position for your ESC will soon be resolved

Most designers, when designing a device to be used on a battery, take into account that any fully charged battery will give a higher voltage than what it says on the label.  If the device says that it is to work with a common round figure voltage associated with a particular type of battery, there is a fair chance that they understood that sometimes it would be connected to a freshly charged one.

cheers guys,

Got a reply from A.Electronics this morning to say they the P98's will be ready soon (no idea what soon is).. which is what i was told a good few weeks back lol, but at least i got a reply so hopefully they be in stock within next week or so, fingers crossed :) ..it was also meant to be a xmas prezzy from the mrs! lol

Reason why i need it is at the moment i cant really continue the build within the hull as i need to make sure the motor i have is adequate, because if it isn't then i will need to search for another motor which will probably be bigger in size which means i will then also need to make a larger mount & re position it etc, if i had to do this with the deck fitted etc it will be much more difficult, so makes sense for me to test it out with the deck not fitted, then once i'm happy with the way it runs, i can then fit the deck & continue with the build :)

Mtroniks also do a 24v ESC - http://www.mtroniks.net/prod/Boat-Speed-Controls/Viper_Marine_20_HV.htm

aye that's the one i mentioned in my post but i wasn't sure if it would be ok to use with 4x 6v SLA's as the fully charged state of each batt would be over 6v whereas the Action ESC supports upto 30volt (probably for this reason) so think i'm gonna just wait it out until action have them back in stock to stay on safe side \o/

I would happily run a Mtroniks on 4 fully charged 6v SLA batteries.

NB: Be careful not to run SLA batteries down to totality flat.... ANY battery come to think of it, especially LiPo!  :o
Some ESC's have this as a selectable option.

You could also look at Electronize there 24v ESC works very well
