As a big fan of cutaway submarine models, I could not resist the temptation to get me the Trumpeter VIIc for Christmas. I'll post pictures of the build here, without allot of commenting. If you want to know more, just ask......
So far I build everything according to plan, only with slight modifications on the bunks, coloring and the air bottles, and I will slightly modify the torpedo tube hatches.

I've found a set of you tube videos showing the build of one of these. They have actual war time film of U boats and opponents interspersed with the model build, he also has historical details. The first one is an introduction which will be followed by ten more showing the construction. As of yesterday he is up to part 4 of the construction with new videos every two weeks.
The introduction is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agsZzsl1s6g (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agsZzsl1s6g)

Taking shape. The torpedo tubes are pretty much done. Still waiting for photo-etched details. I'll add some more details in the living area. The ceiling is now equipped with LEDs. The torpedos are glued into place and need some additional weathering.

O.K., started with some modifications to the kit. I fabricated a second cover out of styrene to mirror the one of the right. Turned out reasonably well. I also added some light rust effects on the steel floor.

I also started to modify the lower part of the torpedo room. Actually there the kit is missing the lower end of the pressure hull. Below the torpedo storage compartment were the torpedo balancing tank and some trim tanks. With a bit of styrene I added a section of the pressure hull and some internal bulkheads. The ribbing will be next.

Good progress Dr Schmidt......however one question......I am a little concerned with the length of the torpedo as shown and the orientation of the torpedo tube bank cell..
My only experience was with the OMC [one man control] hydraulic systems on Oberon Class submarines for our Royal Australian Navy which I realise is totally different to the VIIC Class [although I did see some torpedo loading and handling] .......Derek
-
Hi,
I doubt that the length is accurate. To my knowledge the front end of the tubes were closed by pressure tight hatches. So those are missing. Also the kit detailing of the outer torpedo hatches and the corresponding internal structure is poor. That will be allot of additional work.
Cheers Andreas

You can actually grasp more of the detailing of the torpedo tubes by looking at this insane built of a 1:72 Revell VIIc

Test fitting. The interior of the bow will need allot of additional details.....
Additional details have already been added to the front of the pressure hull. The original ended in a steel-cast, dome-like pressure hull flor. 3D-Printing --> done.

Despite my initial intention to build the kit as is, I keep on adding details and modify the interior. I completed the segment of the lower pressure hull. The first segment got ribbing with styrene T-profiles. The front segment was a bit of a battle. Bending 1 mm styrene sheet, getting everything in shape in three dimension.....but now it looks O.K.. The front segment ill get ribbing, too.

Undecided what to o with the push rod for the bow planes. The model has placed it in the center line, but know there is a keel plate. The original plans do not help either...I guess I'll route it behind the keel.

Here some details of the front section of the pressure hull floor and the ribbing:

not sure if you are aware of this thread... but some of your questions regarding the details not visible in the plans might be available here... i know that this is not the same version u-boat as the trumpeter.. and the thread is enormous, but the research simon has put into this is astounding:

in addition to simon's thread, there is also tore's thread:

Impressive......but I can't see most of the pictures {:-{
But actually I found a schematic....
The push rod IS off center. It's shifted to starboard...so my instincts were right.
-
Impressive......but I can't see most of the pictures {:-{
yeah, on most of those posts, the imageshack pictures appear to have died... but on the 99 page thread, stuff starts to show up around page 20... and his last 10 pages or so start showing his 3d renderings
i think the post author did it on purpose... he is planning on releasing a book.

Torpedo tubes in the making. Basic paint is on. The gray was enhanced using a gray filter. Now working on accentuating the relief using washes of various shades. Then some wear and tear....
The addition to the pressure hull is done. I added the T-ribbing and the stuffing box for the feedthrough of the push rod for the bow planes. Then some fantasy plumbing to get everything a bit more realistic. BAsic paint is on.....

Nice paint work! :-))
(and great photos!)

It is impressive how well thought out storage was, though I would not want to sleep above all that explosive!
You are doing a great job Doctor.

Slow progress, because a plethora of details has to be taken care of......lots of accentauting, aging, weathering. But the lower two sections of the torpedo room are almost done:
Getting the details of the torpedo tubes more vivid using black wahses:

The front bulkhead with the torpedo tubes is assembled. The hatches for the tubes lack detail. The hand wheel for the locking mechanism and the handle are only embossed. So I made handles from .5 mm diameter brass and added some photo-etched hand wheels. The embossed structures are sanded off and now I like it much better:

O.K., bow torpedo room is pretty much done. The kit is lacking detail around the torpedo hatches. There is no inner structure whatsoever, so I have to build that on my own. Using a contour gauge I start by making the bow bulkhead out of 1 mm styrene.

Excellent work Dr.
-
Still working on the inner structure for the bow. I've added the bulkheads, struts and plates to form ballast tank 5, which was located in the bow around the torpedo tubes. On top of the tank was the anchor winch and the air release valve. Those will be added later. In the tank, between the tubes , was the box for the anchor chain. I fabricated the box out of styrene.

With anchor winch, spare torpedo compartment, compressed air botlle it starts to look like something....
-
It is simply amazing what you are adding to this... it is just too bad that for the amount of money this thing costs, that detail wasn't already there.
-
I think it's not too expensive given the size of the kit and the number of highly detailed parts. But I agree that the bow could be equiped a bit better.
-
Working on the muzzle doors of the torpedo tubes. They are equipped with PE hatches from a set by rcsubs.cz
Quite tricky getting them soldered together. But together with the actuation push rods they look quite nice.

-
I wonder sometimes if the product design department have an R&D budget, and when they near its limit they have to make decisions about what they can include in the kit. I would thinkthat with things like cars or Tanks, they will be pretty aware of what they have the money to do, but developing more involved subjects like Subs may be more of a journey.
Lovely work especially with that complex chain locker!
-
Continuing with adding details around the muzzle door and the vent valve:
The vent valve is a knee shaped exhaust and it will get a hatch and the actuation mechanism:
For those who are interested ho the venting system on a VIIc worked, here's a nice picture:
And everything still fits nicely in the hull:
-
Almost finished with the bow structure. Added the bulkheads for the forward buoyancy tank. A tank that surfaced is above the waterline and which helps to limit the bow cutting into heavy seas. When submerged, this tank is vented like a standard ballast tank.
I've also reworked the supports fr the compressed air bottle that was located in the buoyancy tank, to make them a bit more like 3D objects and not just flat pieces of styrene.
-
Astounding attention to detail Dr.
-
O.k. the 3D-printed pats for the vent valve actuator and the respective hatch arrived.Basically it was a thread rod-driven knee joint.
The valve was driven by a hand wheel in the control room. Outboard transmissions drove the thread road. Those will be added later. Looks quite good installed:
-
Wrapping up the bow section. I began adding the ribbing on the inner sides of the hull. Also the front torpedo storage container is installed (I added some mounts).
Also added some supports to the platform of the vent valve actuator of ballast tank 5. And it got its drive shaft.
The bow buoyancy tank will also get a 3D-printed vent valve. It was operated from the bow torpedo compartment by a handwheel that actuated an angular wheel gearbox.
I reproduced the gearbox using brass and resin:
Gearbox glued into place, PE handwheel installed and painted.

The 3D-printed vent valve for the bow buoyancy tank arrived and is installed. Flimsy little thing.....

Also the drive shafts for the actuation of this valve are done.
The hull got the internal ribbing. Slim ones for the wet part, and thick ones for the interior of the pressure hull.
I also started working on the next room and found a first problem. The battery arrangement is wrong. To fix this, I had to cut the battery cells about 4 mm short - now they are correct. To add the missing cells, I'll make a silicone mould and cast the needed cells in resin.

Working on the officers room which alo holds the sonar room, a toilet, and the radio room. It's pretty straight forward, but it requires allot of painting wood panels.

Continuing with the build of the officers' room. The beds, the sonar, and the radio room are assembled.

Under room for the crew is the forward battery room, the ammo storage, waste and fresh water tanks and all that surrounded by the forward oil bunker. The battery setup in the kit is wrong and incomplete. I shortened the battery cells and cast additional ones from resin for the back rows of cells. Then tedious painting......
I also made the battery service sled from brass wire and styrene sheet.

I also changed allot with respect to the structure of the battery room. The ceiling got two rail for the service sled. The back wall is the inner wall of the oil bunker, that surrounds the battery room. The rectangular structure in the lower left is the waste water tank.
And I'm quite pleased with the look of the assembled piece:

Test fitting of the second section....looks good! But still allot to do. I designed some cool ammo boxes for the ammo bunker. The things in the kit don't hold up to the standard of the rest of the model. The ceiling of the officers rooms has to be painted and the LEDs installed. So enough to do before I can start with the control room.

This time only one pic...the work of the last two weeks: The wall of the central control room. Quite some work as there are so many details to paint and weather.

And that forest of handweels can only be the inner layer of the dozens you will be installing no doubt! I really like what you are doing with this model Dr. The kit may as well have been a cardboard tube given all the hours you have done on it, and you are not even half way through yet.
The Officer's space is excellent, but the mechanical details of the front compartment is most impressive.
:-)) :-)) :-))
-
Still wrapping up the officers rooms and the battery deck, but I also started on the structure for the control room. The lower decks section is completely wrong again and a mere copy of the CMK resin kit for the 1:72 Revell VIIc. The control room floor has a second floor called Bilge, where waste water accumulates. The front part of the lower deck is part of the bow fuel oil tank. Then comes ballast tank 3, followed by the aft fuel bunker. The ballast tank has been enhanced by additional bulkheads and pressure tight end caps (3D printed). The Bilge was modeled using styrene. A bit of weathering and that thing looks like something....

A scratch built detail in the ammo bunker below the officers rooms: A shelf for aluminum ammo boxes. The boxes were CAD-modeled, 3D-printed, than a silicon mould was taken and the boxes reproduced using resin. Thee frame of the shelf is styrene again:

What is the large boiler like construction in the middle of the control room?
-
What is the large boiler like construction in the middle of the control room?
if i am not mistaken that is the cylinder in which the attack periscope resides, when it is lowered.
-
I did wonder but was distracted by the size of the cylinder.
-
The large vertical circular chamber also marries up with a same sized chamber below the deck level......and too many large DC motors & pumps...one could not hear anything but the noise >>:-( of the pumps........
Could we be misled by the name Control Room?......possibly a machinery space Control Room :o, but not the location of the various periscopes, communication and control functions which are all located Command Centre which is further aft within the hull
Just a guess ;D ..... Derek
-
No, it eas the command center. The large tube indeed is the housing of the attack periscope that was operated from the conning tower.
-
Thank you. It is a big affair that I have not seen in any films. You see the periscopes, but they are the sexy bits so understandable.
-
Well this also had me tossed, however a little research helps explain the large cylindrical 'tube' as fitted to these vessels....
Hope the Kommander did not suffer from claustrophobia >>:-(
The Oberon Class of vessel [although a different age or design vintage] had both the attack periscope and the observation periscope open and in close proximity to each other in the Command space
But then again I was attached to Above Water Weapons......& not that of below the briny :D......Derek
-
Another update...doesn't look like much but the details eat away the time. Control room floor and ballast tank are almost done. The bow bulkhead of the control room is almost done too (just some hand wheels missing).

Still some work on the officers room. Keel has been closed and the bow oil tank got it's black color. Next is the LEDs in the ceiling and then just some touch up work.

What a horrible arragement for the attack periscope :(( It looks like a bathysphere in design and I cannot think what the designers were thinking of.
-
It's just the housing, and I'm still reseraching if it doesn't serve other purposes as well. The periscope actually was operated form the conning tower.
-
Control room starts to look like something:

Continuing with the sergeants quarters which holds the aft battery deck too. Behind the bunks is the kitchen and some storage space.

O.K. here we go again. Haven't been lazy building, just lazy documenting it. So here is the almost finished petty officer section with kitchen and storage on the crew level, and the aft battery room below. The crew quarters are built without changes, but the battery compartment had to be reworked substantially, as it was completely wrong as delivered with the kit. Actually Trumpeter is repeating the CMK mistakes. Makes one wonder......
For the battery deck I did the same as for the front one. Shorten the battery cells, make a silicon mould, cast them in resin, and the make new ones. Then do the proper arrangement, not the tilted one. Encase everything in styrene, as the batteries are surrounded by u-shaped oil-tank. Took a while, but now I'm pleased with the outcome.

Working on the Diesel engine compartment. The diesel itself is a masterpiece. Over 100 parts, including PE parts. Very nice, but nothing for folks with unsteady hands or bad eyesight. The rest is bizz as usual. As it is a engine room, I went a bit more heavy with the filters and washes. Should be nice.....

More detail work on the diesel engine. Aging and weathering with different filters and washes. Time consuming.....Attached the six tiny PE hand wheels for the cylinder check and the bigger red wheels as well. Getting there.

Aw! That engine is gorgeous! I would have that displayed on its own on a nice plinth as a memorial to engineering.
The model is coming on a treat Dr.
-
The diesel is indeed the highlight of the kit.....
First coarse assembly of the diesel engine compartment. Looks quite good. Again, the part below the floor has to be altered quite substantially to actually make sense. But that's doable.....

O.K., haven't been lazy building, but shooting pics. So here's an update of the almost completed last section, the stern compartment with the electric motors and the stern torpedo tube. Unfortunately Trumpeter got kinda lazy with this section, so I already reconfigured the lower back (white styrene) where the stern trim tank was located. The pressure hull had a triangular gap with respect to the floor. I filled this gap. The complete lower part of the pressure hull is missing. I'll have to scratch build this as well.......so even if it looks quite complete, still quite a way to go....

Again a superb development of a basic kit. It is a lesson in what these vessels looked like inside that even the best documentries or films cannot fully show.
-
When one looks at above pictures one could believe, that the stern torpedo room is done....well, not quite. The complete lower half of the pressure hull and the t-frames are missing. Also the section below the torpedo tube, where the stern trim tank was located, was wrong. So I altered the back part to resemble the trim tank and added the lower pressure hull with the frames. Tedious job, but finished it looks quite good.....well, despite the backside. I also added the torpedo loading tube, which was missing in the kit, too.

-
It is all worth it in the end :-))
-
Indeed, indeed.....
And complete with the stored extra torpedo. In the kit the torpedo is just sitting flush on the floor with no fixation. Kinda bad idea with a boat roling in heavy seas. So I scratch built two bases and tied the torpedo down with styrene wire. Looks better me thinks ;-)

Flappy torpedoes would affect stability somewhat as well as ruin their accuracy if the internals are knocked about too much.
-
And I guess it wouldn't be great for the interior of the boat when a 1,5 t Torpedo bangs around.....
-
Progress is slow as there are many little things to do that require some time. E.g. the hatch and of the rear torpedo tube is missing as is the parts of the hull where the torpedo exits the boat. I shaped this using glass fiber and made the hatch from resin. I also started to modify the outer sections that go into the stern, e.g. dive bunker 1. Lots of fitting, modifying and whatnot. But it comes together. I will make a real cut away boat, so I'll cut the transparent hull and the stern section open. To do this properly I already glued the stern section to the starboard transparent forward half of the hull. Assembled that thing looks "xxxxx" huge...compared to a 1:72 Revell VIIc

Thanks allot....

O.K., still slow progress. Mainly because I had to rebuild the aft dive bunker 3 times. Ripping of styrene, putting on new sheets in a new configuration. reason was, that the bunker has an intricate shape, that I had problems figuring out from the drawings I have. But now I guess is pretty accurate. The bunker has a dome like shape with the bow end splitting into two sections that sandwich the rudder lever (to which the drive shafts) for the rudders are attached and the spare torpedo compartment. The two bottles for compressed air rest on these sections, angled upwards. I also put in the blow valve for the bunker and the corresponding mechanics. I also added the drive shaft for the aft torpedo tube hatch and cover. What is still missing is the electric drive for the rear dive planes, it's drive shaft and the deflection mechanism that connects it with the planes. But I'll have to think a bit how I'm going to make that.

Again small progress. I decided to add the actuator for the rear dive planes. You can see it in front of the stern torpedo tube. It's basically an electric motor with a gear box and a push rod driven by a thread road. The thing is pretty much the same thing than the one driving the rudders. Modeled in CAD, 3D printed, painted......
-
Progress is still slow. I attached the photo-etched parts for the stern limber holes. That was a first for me and took a while, especaially because I removed the hull sections so that the remaining parts resemble steel ribs. One can look inside this section, so it has to look good. Also scratch built and installed the lower bulkheads behind the end of the pressure hull. Also scratch built the stringers between the pressure hul and the bulkhead of the rear dive bunker. Pain in the ass, but I'm pleased with the result.

Brilliant work Dr.

Andreas.....the collapse of the Photobucket hosting is certainly a distress...do you have an alternate WEB listing?
Anyway, back in May of 2017...I missed these High Pressure Air Bottles mounted above the fwd & aft torpedo spaces ....
Surprisingly these bottles were mounted external of the pressure hull, or the were in the outer free flooding shell and hence not accessible for any form of maintenance when the submarine was at sea
The bottles would have been charged to ~~300 Bar [4500 PSI] by the submarine's HP air compressors......the function was to near instantaneously release this HP volume of air so to produce the explosive like charge of air to thrust/blast the torpedos from the vessels torpedo tubes.....
