Title: something completely different ( German Iron Cross medal on eBay )
Post by: BFSMP on January 22, 2017, 12:19:45 am
was looking at a model this ebay seller had up, when I started looking through his other unusual items and came across this one......

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GERMAN-WW1-IRON-CROSS-MEDAL-AND-RIBBON-/201785683224?hash=item2efb5d2d18:g:Xu8AAOSwnHZYQH55

would this be genuine with oak leaves and cluster at that meagre price. not that I wish to buy it and wear it down the local whist drive afternoon, I must say.

Described as WW1 medal - have a look at all 4 pictures - 1 states 1813, the other 1914 %%

According to "Wiki" the award was introduced in 1813 which would make the 1813 one quite expensive, I would imagine. :-X

apparently all of the ww1 crosses carried the 1813 date because it was instituted in that year originally with date of award as the second date. the award was updated with 1939-45 crosses carrying the date of the 2nd "edition " of 1924 I believe............so dates wise it is correct..........just thought that if genuine they would be worth more with the oak leaves and clusters.

but being no specialist, probably not.

Without being cynical and considering the absolutely immense range of beautiful quality :-)) produced items, I would suspect many of these war memorabilia if subjected to carbon dating would confirm as being manufactured very recently and probably in the Great Land of China O0

I used to have an acquaintance who had a drawer full of them.(Amongst others) I think they were a bit like our 'Mentioned in Dispatches'.

Looks like brass/gunmetal, I thought the Iron Cross was just that, Iron. nemesis

Yes you a probably right. I once paid someone who had a U-Boat flotilla badge. A Fiver to take a copy off. Cast it in silver and stuck it on my lifeboat stand. I think it must be difficult to get genuine articles these days. nemesis
