Title: I.O.W. boating places?
Post by: Nemo on January 29, 2017, 11:41:06 am
I am planning a short break on the Isle of Wight soon and wondered about suitable boating ponds/lakes.
I know only of the Canoe Lake at Ryde.  Any other locations?
Thanks.
Bob.

I had an invite to take the Akula there...beautiful lake, very clear and plenty of room to room.

I'm not sure if there's any other waters available, I'll ask for you and see what comes up.

There is this little puddle in East Cowes. Not a big pond, but nice and clear- good for testing small subs!

I'll check that out, but I think it's for kiddies to paddle in.

When are you planning on going over, Nemo? We shall be there 12th-16th next month.

As I thought - not many places to sail my yachts on the Island, unless any more are advised.

Rich, I'll probably not make it before Easter now, having received some family news today. The Canoe Lake is an excellent venue, but it would be nice to have an alternative place to play at.

Bob, the Canoe Lake is ideal for yachts, it's the home water for the local model yacht club. I was lucky to be invited to sail the Akula there, they don't normally cater for anything with a motor in it, let alone one that submerged and fires torpedoes  :-)

Sorry to hear of his your family news...hope it's not bad news?

Rich, I have been past the Canoe Lake before and on my last visit in 2015 I wished I had taken my boats with me!  It does seem a shame that a place like the IOW with all it's yachting history should have so little in the way of boating lakes.
Not 'bad' news today, just a mutual shuffling of family diary dates to accommodate each others holidays.

We found a lovely pub whilst out and about  (but I'm blowed if I can remember where it was) it had a cracking lake in the grounds,  but when I made furtive enquiries about sailing the Akula in it, I was turned down flat due to the owner's koi carp....mind you, some of the things were about the same size as my boat!

Try these guys;

The Isle of Wight Model Engineering Society. They have a pool which sounds about the same size as the temporary pool at last Septembers Headcorn show.
