halfords spray paints seemed to be recommended for painting grp hulls so i have gone with them (and primers/filler primers) i have purchased all the paint required except a suitable red, the label on the cans is a bit misleading as the images of the finishes on vehicles look very different to me
anyone have an idea on which of halfords reds are the closest match for a dull hull red?

I always use the Halfords red primer for below the waterline. Almost a perfect match. You can always lightly spray polyurethane clear semi gloss varnish over if you prefer a semi gloss finish.

If you go for a NON metallic red colour it will appear 'flatter'

Be careful when buying a straight colour as it could well be what is called in the trade as a Base coat colour which means it will need a laquer to get a deep gloss.........you description is a bit vague if I can be blunt to say this...please dont take offense........A good move would be to go to B&Q and look at the colour chips they have in the paint section....choose the colour you need and take the colour chip to Halfords....if they can not do that colour PM me and let me know what the exact colour chip you have chosen and ill pop to B&Q and get my locla paint man to match it up and Ill send you an Aerosol of it .
if it is under the water line then the best match for this is Halfords RED PLASTIC primer

As Stavros says Halfords red plastic primer every time with a coat of satin lacquer or varnish to waterproof it.
