Anchors aweigh away. %)

 {-) {-) {-)

Must admit, I've never witnessed anything like that before %% Makes me wonder why this particular operation was being filmed in the first place though...

Regards,

Ray.

Classic example of unintelligent operators, besides loss of anchor and chain the whole windlass will now have to be stripped down rebuilt examined and tested along with windlass securing bed etc by a classification surveyor, very expensive, think I have mentioned before that size anchor etc. has to be walked down to the seabed using the windlass motor and has been the MCA recommendation for years now.

That is a classic. It was put up last year and the concensus amongst those who have worked on ships etc was that the windlass had benn improperly serviced hence the cyclic graunch where part of the brake drum had rusted and was causing the operator (IIRC a trainee) to try and compensate for this which in the end failed causing them to lose control.

It just shows what stresses are on these components and is a good example of why things sould be serviced regularly. I recall a saying that includes 'for a ha'pence of tar' being pertinent  {:-{

They were no doubt working on the principle don't waste money and time on maintenance it ain't broke. O0 O0

All that money saved will more than pay for any repairs. Plus bonuses for having a reduced budget each year. %) %) %)

Love It {-) {-) %% %%

I know little about these large ships, small sailing boats upto 60ft yes. How much chain do these guys have in the locker and what's the significance of the white links, I presume an indicator of how much chain is out? On the small boats we used to put different colours on the chain at
the fathom marks>(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag473/geoff122/Model%20Steam/Aust%20emos/ozzhatcorks_zpsyyfdobuw.gif) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/geoff122/media/Model%20Steam/Aust%20emos/ozzhatcorks_zpsyyfdobuw.gif.html)

The answer is in the video of the US Navy ship. If you join the dots in the info given.
The white links are spaced at every 'shot', a shot is at every 15 fathoms, there appears to be a different colored link and the whites are on either side of it. Each shot has more white links than the last to identify which shot it is (1st, 2nd, 3rd shot, etc.).
In this video, you see the 17th shot followed by the 'Danger'shot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7pRfix_sNg&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7pRfix_sNg&feature=youtu.be)
In this video you see the USS George Washington https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg3wwhhJ1aM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg3wwhhJ1aM) . Then penultimate shot is followed by all yellow links, which is then followed by all red links.
