Hi,
I am starting my first scratch build using a Kingston Mouldings "Lady Margaret" fiberglass hull. I would like to do a satin finish on the outside of the hull and my question is, is it better to spray with satin paint and use a satin clear coat or spray with a gloss finish and used a satin clear coat?
Kind regards,
Bob

Shouldn't make any difference but you might find the satin finishes a bit too glossy. Often the nominally matt finishes will have about the right sheen for a model.
As always try out on test pieces first.

Hi Colin,
Thanks for you quick reply. If that is the case, I think I just may go ahead and use gloss paint because I will be apply a stripping tape on the side of the hull and I believe it will adhere better to a glossy finish and then use a matt finish for final coat.
Kind Regards,
Bob

Hi T33cno,
That looks really nice. Do you happen to have a sample of something with a matt finish?
Kind regards,
Bob

No sorry but you can matt the satin with very fine wire wool or spray over it.

I guess the untreated primer on the hull would be as near as dammit

Hi T33cno,
Hmmm, that primer does look a bit too flat for my taste. I think I would like to have just a wee bit more shine but not much.
Kind regards,
Bob

Thanks for the updated picture T33cno but I cannot tell anything from it as it appears to be mostly in shadow which makes proper evaluation difficult.
Kind regards,
Bob
