Hi Yesterday we made the trip over to Scarborough to check out the fishing vessels in the harbour. I needed some pictures of the weathering found on working fishing vessels. These are some of the pictures taken.

Lots of rust, chipped paintwork and the odd case of discoloured galavnise (the ochre areas on zinc covered items).
There are loads of rust making kits out there and the chipping can be done either using the hairspray technique or artisitc application of paint.

I prefer the salt method of chipping it seems to give a coarser effect than hairspray. Damp the part for rusting, sprinkle on seasalt (sparingly) not the common housesalt, allow to dry then spray on your preferred colour, you can repeat this process on top of what is already there if you wish. Once all paint has dried use an old toothbrush and water to brush/scrub/dissolve the salt away leaving the effect.
What amazes me is the colour of rust on ships, compared to an old car or other landbased rusted metal it seems so orange in colour. Landbased rust seems to be more dark browns than brighter orangey brown.

I have noticed on an old oil drum used as an incinerator that the dark rust got orange streaks on it when it rained suggesting that we see a constant effect from the sea wetting the metal and it drying off periodically? Either way it is an art form creating miniature rust effects and can be astoundingly realistic.

aye great images fella almost can smell the salty air and rotten fish. take note your modellers who like there fishing vessels pristine ! i reckon a fish n chip supper on the cards tonight. ill see thee.
