Regiment was lucky, in 1956 I joined the RAF as an apprentice (82nd entry), pay was 10 shillings and 6 pence.
Happy days!
Cheers

In 1959 I joined the RN as an apprentice
S37 entry I think.
We were paid fortnightly
£3 one fortnight £3 10 shills the next.
Never understood the logic.

Apparently £110.23p according to the Historic inflation calculator. I do not think you would get away with paying that for an engagement ring now so probably a good investment.
I was paid 26s per week National Service in 1957, didn't go far then either (£29.87 today)

Ah how thing change, I to joined the RAF in 1956, for 3 years, and was paid nearly twice as much as the National Service guys, £2 2 shillings a week for me springs to mind. Never for one moment thinking I would finally retire from the RAF some 37 and a bit years later with a pension, that at that time was close to a hundred times my original pay. All relative of course, if I remember correctly in 1957 I only paid 3 shillings and 6 pence for a gallon of petrol (in modern money 18 pence for 4.54 litres) for my new Douglas Dragonfly which brand new from Pride and Sharks sorry Clark's was if my memory is right was not a great deal over £100. Ah memories, good job to still have some I suppose.

The Logic has just come to me!
We were paid cash at a pay parade, no pay packet,
Just money put ito your doffed cap by the Paybob.
Paying us that way negated the need for coins as
we had ten bob notes in them days !

I don't know about wages, and old money but I can remember woodbines none filter being sold in packets of five, and you could win a packet of three ........[ woodbines, naughty naughty] that were made especially for vending machines.
I remember winning a packet as a kid on the crane grab machine on Gt Yarmouth pier as a teenager.....trouble was I had 3 mates who weren't smokers, so smoked the lot before I went home.........never felt so sick in my life...........never smoked again {-) {-) %% :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

Hi all when I left the RAF end of June 1961 I was a Junior Technician radar, (fitter) and the pay was £7.7s.0d per week all found of course. Food at RAF Lyneham was first class.
In the August I started work with ICL at £15 1s.8d per week. However I was offered several other equivalent jobs at little more than the RAF pay.

In the late fifties, we went out of school for lunch with our 1 shilling daily dinner money. You could buy a packet of 2 Guards tipped ciggies, a book of matches and a bag of chips and still have fourpence change for a frozen Jubbly!! Talk about get 'em started young!.
