Title: First build Aeronaut Diva
Post by: dwarena on April 26, 2017, 09:52:27 am
Hi I am newbie and though I did build a Mascot R/C plane many years ago but never a boat which is considerably smaller so not as easy for my banana fingers!  So thought I'd try the Aeronaut Diva.

Its going along nicely but I have  a couple of queries:
1. Is varnish ok as sanding sealer?

2. I have some finishing resin but not sure if that is applied internally or externally and isnt it a bit thick?

3. Also I have two 5cm aluminium tubes and a 14mm brass screw in the kit but not at all sure what they are for ! {:-{

In case they are the crucial to the success if the build I thought I'd risk looking foolish and ask.

Cheers
David

Just realised the aluminium posts are for chair and table Doh! clearly essential  :-)) but one other thing the Diva english instructions mention coaming strips 31 which are identified in the inventory as coaming panels 2x mahogany. but no such panels exist on the sheets enclosed and do not appear on the accompanying german illustrations so i assume they are not necessary or are included within one of the other pieces. Any one any idea what i am talking about!!  :embarrassed:

To answer your first two questions (glad you figured out the aluminium tubes!) -

1.  Yes, you can certainly use varnish on your kit but if you want to seal the wood before sanding then proper sanding sealer is probably better.  But check the reply to number 2....

2.  You can apply the epoxy to both inside and outside - indeed, there are many who would say this is desirable to seal the wood properly.  The epoxy will probaly be fine as it is (it is intended to be a bit thicker than varnish) but if you want you can thin it slightly, either with proper epoxy thinners or a little methylated spirit.  But - if you are going to seal the wood with epoxy, don't use sanding sealer or varnish first.  The epoxy will seal the wood best if it can soak in, and you can varnish over the epoxy to give a shiny finish.

Enjoy your build!

Thanks Greg that's really very helpful. I will use the epoxy as sealer then. As for the mysterious 'coaming strips 31' I am assuming they are now part of the side panel 30 and will ignore!

This site has been really very helpful as well as your response and I am really enjoying the build - not the kit car I had planned for retirement but now without garage/workshop had to find something that would fit in a shed!

Title: Re: First build Aeronaut Diva HELP!
Post by: dwarena on May 05, 2017, 03:11:21 pm
I cannot seem to get the rc to start presumably a rookie mistake or some switch i need to find!  I have enjoyed the build only problem was standard servo is bigger than recommended so fitting it in was problematic. But just wanted to check the system so I connected Battery, motor, esc, receiver, and servo as indicated in the booklet - the led flashed as it said it would - i turned on the transmitter and the led went solid but no reaction when operating the joysticks. I assume I am being stupid so any thoughts welcome. David

It looks like a 2.4GHz set and you may have to pair / binding the Transmitter with the receiver. It should be noted i your manual.

Yes it says that once the LED on the receiver stops flashing and is on solidly the two are binding is complete -  but maybe that is not the case?

Really? No one has any advice for an ingenue?
The motor works if connected directly. Power is obviously getting to the ESC and receiver as LED's on both have lit up, but nothing on joysticks when the transmitter is paired (I assume this is indicated when the LED on receiver stops blinking) - is their some kind of reboot trick i don't know about or is the ESC or transmitter at fault? To quote Jack Nicholson 'I'm dying here" so any suggestion other than they need pairing would be welcome!
Here's hoping

The standard way to check your setup would be to swap out each part (ESC, receiver, servo) to see if a different one works.  However, as this is your first build you probably don't have a bunch of spare parts or another boat that you can use as replacements.  It does sound to me like the receiver or ESC might be faulty if you are certain all the wiring is correct.  However, here is no simple way of checking that unless you have a working system to replace each possibly faulty part. Are you a member of a model boat club?  Do you know anyone local with a boat?  Is there a local model shop still operating in your area?  Any of these might provide the practical assistance that is very difficult here without sight of your setup and the chance to fiddle a bit.

If you reckon you will be building more boats, you could splash out on another couple of receivers and servos and another ESC.  That would help you track down the problem and give you some parts for your next build.

Good luck.

Thanks Greg no the shop in Soton i got the R/C stuff for my mascot plane from has long gone and that was years ago so its an old FM(35Mhz) tx not this 2.4Ghz kit. I could use a servo from that plane but even if servo faulty surely the motor would work (or is that not the case?) and I know that functions when powered directly. So as you say i'm left with the ESC Receiver or Tx and no way of determining which! Thanks for your post though Ill contact Cornwall boats where I got the rig from and see if they will send on sale or return a replacement set. Just as long as there was not some obvious thing i was missing.  As the Rx and ESC both have functioning LEDs could they still be malfunctioning?  The Tx does light up when switched on and communicate with the Rx , as the latter's LED changes if Tx switched on or off, is it likely that that is faulty ie the joysticks not connected somehow?
Thanks for the moral support, much appreciated.

The esc seems to have a red light.
This normally means no signal.
Should the steady led on the rx be red or green when bound.
(Just read some intructions on line and it would seem a red is correct)
Check you have the esc and servo plug with the brown or black wire on
the right hand pin looking at the rx.
It is also worth checking you have not placed the plugs betwee the pins
instead of actually on them.(we have all done it at some time I reckon)

Thanks Ned I had just solved the problem as you expected it was just connected wrongly...... as soon as i turned round the plugs it all worked fine!! red and green light on the ESC when bound. I just assumed they only went in one way like a USB connector but it seems they can go in either way that was the rookie error I was hoping for! All good now just got to work out where the leak is round the rudder tube....
Thanks for your all comments just having someone to bounce ideas back is v helpful.

Great stuff David :-))
Good to see you have found the problem without recourse to the suppliers.
Never be afraid to ask for advice on mayhem.
Someone will probably have the answer.
Good luck with the leak %)
