Title: Holiday in Benidorm
Post by: Klunk on June 11, 2017, 09:20:48 am
For the first time since 1994, I'm going on a holiday ...... to Benidorm. As I'm normally going up the wall in a bank holiday week, is there a local club I could pop along to?

One word No! Closest model boat club is in Torrevieja which is around 60 miles/ 100 kilometres away. You'd even be hard pressed to find a model shop never mind clubs! I've found one in a shopping mall about 50k from us but it mainly deals in plastic scale models, they have a few wooden kits Artesania Latina etc but thats about it.

Forget the models, enjoy the Blackpool in the sun (Benidorm by another name!) Just avoid all the stag and hen party's and you'll do fine :)

Hi Klunk, as Brian says there is a club in Torrevieja, about an hours drive south of Benidorm. We meet on the second Sunday of each month at 10 30 am. I donīt know if thatīs any help as Iīm not sure when youīll be in Spain.
There is also a club in San Vincente del Raspeig, just north of Alicante, Iīve visited a Tug towing event there, but donīt have any details of the club.

 Model shops:
Centro rc Levante in Alicante.   web http://centrorclevante.net/

Also meca models in  Alicante, 2 mins walk from a large department store called El Corte Ingles, a good place for anyone not interested in model shops who might be with you!!
web http://www.mecamodel.es/ (http://www.mecamodel.es/)
and
another model shop in San Vincente, more geared towards cars but still good. top racing modelismo.
web http://www.topracingmodelismo.com/ (http://www.topracingmodelismo.com/)

Model yacht racing on the Mar menor near San javier (Murcia) airport, about 1 hour 40 mins from Benidorm.

And lastly, if you happen to like trains as well, there is a live steam railway 5 mins from Alicante airport.
some videos are on you tube, search for Torrellano steam railway

I would say that our model shops are typical of most places, not brilliant for model boaters, and quite naturally leaning towards ready made stuff so they can make a living.

Not such a modeling desert after all!
Chas

I've used Mecamodel in Alicante, sells a great selection. I bought my son a cracking model railway EMU set the last time I was there.
It's not far from the bus station  :-))

there used to be two modellers who used to sail in the harbour  in moraira ( about 30 mins north of benidorm) i remember it well, one was a traditional spannish fishing boat , the other was a modern smit tug, -

klunk if you have time take a trip on the train, - the lemon express - alicante to somewhere north- eg Javea ( work out how long you can stand the heat and then get off ) .... the route is coastal and the train runs over some  interesting scenery/ gorges etc

el corte ingles is a good store to drop the wife off while you go to the modelshop :-)

Being down there by the sea in the sunshine, surely you could take the opportunity and have a play in some real boats?

Get on the water in a pedalo, rental speed boat, sailing dinghy or something similar?

We went to Benidorm back in the 80's, it was our first holiday without the kids...we actually stayed at the Ocas /  Pelicanos where they film the TV series!  We did the Lemon Express and can vouch for the poor quality firewater they encouraged you to drink, happy days!
