Model Boat Mayhem

Hi all,
Thought I would show my build of a 1:35 Scale canal boat from 3D printed parts, resin castings and etched brass. I usually build 1:35 model railways but always wanted to incorporate canal boats on my next layout.
The model has been designed from plans of a Royalty Class boat which had steel hulls and built in the 1930's. The hull scales down to just over 60cm's in 1:35 scale.
Anyway I will post pics over the next few days if I work out how to attach them,
Hope it is of interest,

Very attractive Mark :-)) How thick is the brass? Seeing the edge of the cargo sides suggests less than .5mm but the size of the model might be misleading.
-
Hi there,
Thanks for the comments
I always use 12 thou brass which is approx 0.3mm at full thickness, the boat is about 60mm width which makes it a bit easier to judge.
The whole hull was originally 3D printed in one part but I have since taken a mould and cast a few in resin which reduces the overall price considerably.
Mark
-
At the moment it would indeed be cheaper to cast them yourself. Do you sell them or are you building a fleet of barges? I suppose you could cut the ends off of a resin hull and insert the cargo section or a part, to build a longer barge.
-
I originally wanted to make just 2 or 3 and really enjoyed designing it so may release it as a kit. I'm already drawing another design of an earlier boat on CAD which has been just as interesting and of course the research you have to do into this kind of craft is as fulfilling as actually building the models.
I already produce a range of 1:35 Narrow Gauge loco and rolling stock kits so may add this to the range in the future, if of course time permits.
I will post some more pics of the model in a more advanced stage tomorrow.

Mark......yes those etched brass plate and section detail is very crisp :-))....I think Ian may have been concerned with weight if the models were for sailing......will they be static display only?
With the larger 5 bolted port lights, remember to keep the bolt orientation uniform between vertical and horizontal placement
Looking forward to more brasswork images
Derek
-
The weight did cross my mind, but did think the sheet did look quite thin, so unless it was festooned with brasss and without a load, it might be top heavy.
But given you designed it Mark, you will have factored these points into your designs.
-
Hi all,
The model Is intended for static display only, although you now have me thinking!!
I was going to make it a waterline model at first but as usual with everything I do I get a bit obsessed and have to get it all, the object now is to sink the boat into foam board so I have the waterline and the depth of the hull for display (although I have modelled the rudder, propeller etc, just to see if I could do it). I plan to have a narrow gauge loco pushing tipper wagons parallel to the bank unloading coal into shoots directly into the boats.
Anyway, here are a few more pics of the build

Hi again,
Now we have the 3D printed basic hull primed and smoothed ready for casting and a coat of paint on the etched cab and engine room, the cab is separate from the hull and at this stage fully removable.

Casting the hull was a complete pain in that the mould is huge, about 2 ft 3" long and costly with the amount of rubber needed. Pics of the resin hull up next,

Did you make the mould as a block or as a skin with plaster case? Either way I doubt it would have been cheap. The last sack of plaster I bought cost £44 from my then local ceramics supplier.
How will you create the painted panels? These will look great when done.
-
The mould is made as two part from RTV silicon rubber and I use Axson fast cast resin. Its not the cheapest but I have been making my own resin parts with this for a few years now. I suppose you get used to a certain way and if it works stick with it. I don't use degassing equipment as I can usually get away with very few bubbles if you do it right.
Not sure about the painted panels at the mo, I know they had a few but just want to see if everything fits with a basic colour scheme. I suppose I would like it to be painted as Victoria which is still running and the same class but just whatever I had available, Humbrol 174 I think.

2ft 3"... ??? on what planet is that huge? :-) i have molds for a 53" type II uboat, and a 83" type VII uboat... with full length 3 part moulds for the hulls...

Ha ha, should have made It obvious I know little about model boats, I only make small model railway parts the largest being a couple of inches, this is a whole new ball game for me,

Hi all,
Bit of experimentation with the resin hull, no shrinkage to report and everything still fits fine,

Morning all,
A bit more detail on the resin hull this morning and some hinge detail on the front hatch,
Hull to be painted this afternoon I think, some Halfords satin black found at the back of the garage!

More detail on the rear of hull, I was going to wait for the decal on the side but couldnt resist it.
Obviously fictional but in a similar style to how it would have been done,

Hi all,
Thanks for the comments, nearly done now, or as far as I can before it takes its place on the new display layout. It will be coal as discussed earlier but not sure of the amount of weathering it will have yet

Thanks for looking at my canal boat build, please feel free to ask any questions, will probably become a kit in the next few months if I can fit it in around the model locos,
Mark

Enjoying the thread Hesky.
Keep the weathering to the hull.
These were home to the family
running the boat and they kept
them as shiny as they could.
Ned
-
Thanks Ned,
Quite right, the locos I do are usually very dirty and battered but canal boats in most cases were kept pristine.
I was at the boat museum at Ellesmere Port a few weeks back and took a lot of pics and measurements of the inside of the living quarters, so may do something for the interior next. With the hatches modelled open the inside is quite visible.
-
It is the same with military vehicles. Yes, they get filthy, and in times of intense combat, they get battered and chipped etc, but once there is a lull in the fighting, the crews were expected to maintain and look after their charges. My friend Norman said that the designated driver or commander of the vehicle (British army, I am not so sure about other nations) could be put on a charge if the vehicle was rusty or in any other way unusable for duty not caused by enemy action. So, I don't doubt that the decks of those coal barges were scrubbed clean after loading and unloading.
