Title: 1/200 scale Yamato
Post by: Stan on July 08, 2017, 06:29:40 PM
HI Guys with the on going building work and me doing other things not a lot of building of models has taken place. This afternoon I managed to do a little on this next project first job to remove all raised mouldings in  the hull. It may be a while before you see any more pictures need to finish the F/Boat first.

Thanks guys it will be while before you see any major progress. I have invested in some nice brass etch for this model and also some very nice brass gun barrels. Should be ok with the 1/200 mighty Mo.

Just a small  update. Prop shafts fitted also four drive motors into the hull. I am using a building adhesive to glue down the metal motor mounts. I have used this before on PT BOAT 596 with very good results may be more pictures tomorrow.

Title: Re: 1/200 scale Yamato

All the motors are fixed in place and tested. The prop shafts are made from the following Outer shafts are 1/8 dia brass and the inner shafts are 3/32 brass. The outer shafts enter the hull into a box section at the end of this is a round tube this is glued to the box section and  a cap is fitted to the box section see pictures.

Just a few pictures showing how many clamps are needed to hold the deck in position until permanent fixings are fitted. Timber braces will be fitted  to keep the hull straight  and decks will be held in place with magnets. Other picture shows connections to main rudder and auxiliary rudder  both operate hopefully will improve turning circle. 40 FM radio fitted to this model 2 channels only rudder two ESC via mixer.

Stan,

Thanks for the pics.

Nice tidy layout no "rats" there.

Looking at the rudder linkage and wondering why the 'kink' in the line, strength?.
Title: Re: 1/200 scale Yamato
Post by: Stan on September 27, 2017, 07:33:13 AM
The reason for the offset in the rudder linkage is due to me not getting the servo in the right postion. Even with this offset it causes no problem with moving the two rudders.

Update on this build. It is a very typical moulding from who knows when. It fits were it fits and misses were it misses I have had to fit timber braces into  the hull to bring it back in line and I have joined the main deck sections together making a one piece main deck. Timber braces have been fitted to take out the bounce of the deck sections. The decks will be held in place using magnets.

Will the magnets give a good seal and will you be using a rubber gasket at hull to deck seam?  Nice work sir.  Cheers... Dennis

HI Dennis yes the magnets will pull down the deck into the hull. I terms of sealing the deck I will not be fitting any seal. Built this model many years ago when the decks were screwed down and it took very little water. After all these are static models and were never made for R C operation. Hope this helps.

Hi all update on the build. Gell cell battery confined to the redundant shelf not enough power to the motors. Mixer also removed going back to tank steering power to be supplied from a 7.4 volt lipo. Magnets removed from second deck section due to poor fit. This section will now be glued in place more to follow.

Sunday morning a cold wind blowing down the lake  not ideal for a plastic model. After removing the mixer and the gel cell battery  and fitting a 7.4 volt lipo performance was much better. I have fitted the old radio that was used on the first build way back in 1992 and I intend to use the old Electronize controllers that came in kit form many years ago. Just one picture from this morning sorry about the glare on the picture.

just a few pictures from today. I have decided to fit the original 40 FM radio that was fitted in my first build of this model. The radio system was supplied in kit form when the T/X and R/X  had been constructed it was sent back to Micron for calibration. Even now it works a treat. I know you will all be thinking what ugly looking thing but after all these years it is still doing its job. You may also see a battery change gone over to a lipo cell  much better than the gel cell.

Hi Stan

Good thread and real nice build, appreciated the advice from you on my tug build which I'm still awaiting the power board to be looked at as just sent it back to Action., soon be on the water Also have a Revell corvette 1:72 I;m on with as well just got all bracing in place and electric layout. sorted, built a static one years ago which I'm just transferring all the superstructure over to a new hull I built and refurbishing.
Anyways been looking at a big ship and the trumpeter models and converting to RC, seeing your already on with one will hopefully be able to pick your brains on the running gear and how to set up 4 props. Seen a few as in bismark and Hood but come across the USS hornet aircraft carrier and all around 4foot long must be impressive on the water. Good to see a thread on these conversions and hopefully will have a model sorted next month.

Cheers Steve

Hi Stan great thread.  I have a slightly newer Micron set, mine came with the RF cct already calibrated, I enjoyed building the set as well, not used it for a while but I also run a Futaba Tx on 27 Mhtz FM and I favour the Micron rx's every time.  I changed my rx's over to modern connectors a while ago.  I have a few 27Mhtz FM crystals, do you have a source?

With the fishing boat 99.99% complete I have started work again on this model  but already I have hit problems. The build book states the plastic is ABS. I have tried solvent glues with no effect so I am now using superglue and UHU Acrylit for construction. The mouldings must be all  types of plastic the funnel glued with solvent weld no problem. Pictures to follow or it may end up in the bin.

Hi Stan
Is this a trumpeter kit, have been looking to purchase one to convert as seen deans marine do a hood model, would you not recommend if that is the case, looks like you have all the hard work done installing the RC kit as well.
Title: Re: 1/200 scale Yamato
Post by: Stan on March 23, 2018, 03:38:26 PM
HI smyster  simple answer the model is a very old  kit made by Nichimo many years ago. The quality of the injection mouldings leaves a little to be desired compered  with today's injection mouldings. The Trumpeter  Hood makes up ok. I have enclosed some pictures of  a club members  Trumpeter Hood enjoy.

Post by: Smyster on March 24, 2018, 07:51:42 PM
Thanks for that Stan

Lot of money to spend out if the kits are not that good of quality, good to know there ok, excellent pics and just like the amount of detail that's included on a big model, thought they might be easier to build than the deans marine kits, its between the hood and the aircraft carrier model USS Hornet

Thanks Steve

HI I have stared to work on this model full time now and what a challenge. The original model had the deck held in place with large screws and they did look the best. The challenge is to find a better way of holding the decks down. I have opted for magnets once again when they are all fitted I will post pictures.  Two  pictures one showing a small magnet holding down a  hatch cover and one showing parts of the hull clamped  to bring it back to something like.

Some more pictures showing the magnets that will secure the read deck sections. Further picture showing wood blocks and bracing the wood blocks will have brass m2 bolts fixed in them to hold the middle deck sections. The bracing will stop downward movement when fitting main superstructure.

Now starts the fun of fitting a large amount of brass portholes . Just a few pictures showing final braces fitted into the hull.

I have been watching this thread from afar Stan.Your build is coming along great.I have this kit part built and lost enthusiasm when various photoetch items didn't fit.I have since learned the problems arise with the gold medal photoetch in that Loren Perry designed the etch from the anatomy of the ship book as opposed to the kit.One problem area is the main turret handrails. The kit turrets are quite a way from where they should be and the rails need modifying to sit properly.
After a brief flirt with the idea to scrap the superstructure and build mine as Shinano,I will revisit the model and build her as Yamato in her final guise. My enthusiasm has been rekindled by Fujimi's kit of her main armament in this scale and also their December release of her fighting tower, which is accurate and more detailed.I have these on order as they are limited availability from Japan along with secondary turrets and 127mm aa armament from L'arsenal. Also I have ordered the additional etch from GMM for the vents and seaplane tracks etc.
It will be a long while before she is back on the bench, and I don't envisage her as being a quick build.

Regards

Nigel
