Title: First Post - My profile and help request -Pulpit construction and materials
Post by: Xplore530 on July 12, 2017, 06:32:58 pm
Hi, this is my first post, so please be gentle with me.  I am based in Nottingham and returning to boating after about 20 yrs, using my old 40Mhz radio gear and restoring my old boats built in the 60's.  Went out over the weekend with my old "Aerokits" 34" crash tender and had a great time.  Bugsier tug is next and then my old "Norstar" 36" Wave Princess which needs a new motor and totally refitting.  I want to fit a Pulpit to the front of the boat, does anyone have any advice on how to construct one that is reasonably solid and what materials to use for it?

Hi
The best is brass rod either silver soldered which is the strongest or soft soldered.

Hi Ian,

If you've got one of the mini blow lamps of the cooks type then silver soldering with the lower (280degree) solder is straight forward as is working with the silver solder paste which comes in a syringe with added flux. With the latter it's really a case of cut the bits, clean them properly, squirt some of the mix on, heat and enjoy! The only tricky bit is making sure you're working on a non-flammable surface.
It's worth using a jig to hold the pieces together but there is an article in Model Boats on just that.

Have a look for a company called Cupalloy and it'll give you the source of materials.

Good Luck and Welcome.

Tony

Thank you Tony.  I have a small gas torch that doubles as a standard soldering iron and the added blow torch.  I will have a go after getting some flux first. Appreciated.  Best regards Ian
