Title: Creased Sails
Post by: Hurric123 on July 19, 2017, 10:42:50 am
Hi, my newly acquired, but old yacht has some badly creased sails especially the jib. It looks like they have been badly stored.
They are not cotton or cloth. They are a racing type sail professionally made. The material is like a thick nylon but with a fine woven texture and the have colored sections with stitched edge and stress areas plus stick on numbers. I am wondering if a cool iron over a damp tee towel will work.? I am very scared about melting the fabric.

Sounds like ripstop nylon as used in tents. I use a damp cloth on them and press with medium heat iron.
Always check in an interest place with the temp though!

Any chance of a close up picture of the material, to confirm that it is rip-stop nylon? It may even be Dacron or something else.
The safest thing would be to spread it on an ironing board, and use a wet cloth over it, then a cool iron, and if needed increase the temperature a little each time.
The only other thing I would be cautious of is any other iron on things. The numbers could be iron on, I also have some tape on some edges and bolt rope sleeves that are iron on. After ironing, just remember to let it cool a little before moving anything.
