Post by: roycv on September 19, 2017, 12:05:16 pm: Hi all, hope lots of you are coming, we shall have for sale marine items in the club hall. They include most of an unstarted Schaarhorn kit, hull and plans.
Bristol sailing Pilot cutter Hilda 2 with plans and fittings, 49 inches loa, hull started and very well done.
A nearly finished model of sailing yacht Britannia 4 feet loa. Sandy Cousins plans included. (fantastic model the masts are a work of art)
A complete HMS Solebay kit in a purpose made box.
A started tug boat, Anteo (I think).
Some smaller boats and what ever turns up on the day together with some spares and bits and pieces.
Graupner water jet unit with Speed 700 motor.
Nothing to break the bank.

Post by: roycv on September 23, 2017, 10:07:29 pm: Hi all, we had a great first day over 800 tickets sold and lots of smiley faces. Could not be done without the support of the visiting clubs though.

Our Flight Simulator turned out to be more than we bargained for! It was a micro-light glider with big TV screens and a simulated journey where you work the wings to fly it.

It was a reasonable day for weather but tomorrow (Sunday) should be sunshine. Great day for the younger generation and they all seemed to enjoy themselves.

I parked it carefully in the top of a tree but managed a good loop before that.

..... and yes it was a full size microlight, kite, hang-glider thingy!

I saw then formation flying at a show once in the late 1970's......the three UFO'S were in fact Hover lawn mower mock ups........it was great and surreal to watch.

Post by: roycv on September 25, 2017, 08:14:00 am: Hi all, I would like to thank all the participating clubs, we had a record attendance of 1176 adults and 570 children totalling 1746 visitors over the weekend, strangely we sold exactly the same number of tickets each day!

The photos above are from just one of the halls and the pool outside, there were 2 other halls and 4 classrooms all filled with models. We also had a large 4 track Scalextric layout for visitors to race on and paper and polystyrene flying model aeroplane construction for children that did 'embarrassingly well' to quote the organizers. On the stage we had a warehouse feature with lorry deliveries and fork lift trucks loading and unloading, we have a promise of bigger and better next year! This had a step up so that young visitors got an eye level view.
The Tamiya truck display was really good and very visitor friendly and a larger set up than at Alexandra Palace last year.
On the green outside you could also view our Steam on the move displays, including free train rides, a demonstration track 5 inch gauge, a half scale traction engine and smaller ride on steam lorry and rolling road for steam locos.
This would lead you to the flying field with helicopters aircraft and drones also professional drones feeding back live HD TV pictures.
One visitor on leaving gave our Treasurer £5 and said it was worth far more than the £4 entry, Nice thought but we keep the entry price as low as possible as everyone is feeling the pinch these days and the school hire costs are reasonable at about £1100 for the weekend.

On another thread commercial venue costs are possibly causing difficulty perhaps they should try a local school who would welcome the money.
We use various Facebook and newspaper advertising with flyers for shows we attend and this brought out lots of families with young children, there was a general 'buzz' rather than the screaming kids you might have expected. Very noticeable to me with hearing aids (or bionic enhancement as I like to view it).
We are very safety conscious and pay for the Red Cross to attend and have a safety officer as well. Catering is supplied by faithful wives and friends and much appreciated.

We would also like to thank the exhibitors for helping to clear up the hire tables we bring in and restore the classrooms for use by pupils the following day.
We, like many clubs have an advancing average age, due to a lack of younger people joining us. If we get physical help to set up and knock down then we shall continue our modelling extravaganzas each year.
The profits go to help support the club during the year and also the escalating cost of printing our monthly gazette. When rummaging around and clearing up when a much loved member had passed away a few years ago I found an advert for our show dated May 1981, when pensioners were invited in free on production of pension book, we are almost all pensioners now, but lucky us is what I think!

We hope to return in the last weekend in September 2018 (25th, 26th) but cannot confirm this until the New Year when the school looks at its calendar for the year.

That is providing the flesh is willing etc. I shall leave breaking the news to club members until they have got over their aches and pains so until then lets keep it our little secret.
School cost a little more than last year but OK with us.

Post by: Klunk on September 25, 2017, 11:40:35 pm: Been going to this exhibition for 12 years now and it goes from strength to strength. What is the best aspect as far as im concerned is the interactivity for the kids. This year there was the flight sim, trucks, have a go boats, ride on trains, scalectrix, mini subs, build decorate and fly gliders. As well as some of the train layoits letting kids have a go at controlling the trains. This is how to get kids interested in modelling.....other shows take note. Also the low admission price was family friendly and the catering was cheap and relatively healthy......cakes not withstanding! There was even an icecream van outside doing a roaring trade.

Post by: Canterbury Coxswain on September 27, 2017, 11:14:35 pm: I have to say it was yet another great Show - well done Clive, Roy, Mike and the rest of the Committee, Members and the ladies of the Society. You deserved the end result. Also the way that Tony the school caretaker looks after everyone with absolutely no sign of 'jobsworth' - makes a very pleasant change, compared to some Shows.
I have attached a few photos of the LBES stand organised by Jeff Carter [also a member of St. Albans MES] and helped by Lee Dickinson and his nephew Jacob and myself. I collected £26.60 across the two days for the RNLI and I know Jeff had a box too.
Will definitely book the dates for next year when known - I've been for some seven years now - if you come you will not be disappointed, you've seen what Roy has said was there to be seen.
Again, well done St. Albans MES!

Thanks for all the nice comments, some of the more elderly among us have gone into a meditive state reflecting on what has past. We look to our ex-Chairman Guy a mere 98 years old to rally us for next year.

Post by: roycv on September 28, 2017, 01:52:58 pm: Hi BFSMP, the launch was built by Bill Langton one of our members, he has another equally good but smaller. The large one is 9 feet long and was built over a period of 20 years, on and off. He did everything himself, engine, boiler, woodwork and i agree it is quite stunning.

We try to have the last weekend in September and hope to see as many as can get there. Plans are in hand and with the great cooperation of the attending clubs to have the best show we can of most kinds of modelling.
