Title: Old ni-cad's Ni-miH's as ballast or dump?
Post by: JB on October 08, 2017, 11:17:06 am
Wasn't really sure where to put this one...shift if needed.

I've accumulated a few old rechargable batteries, around 7-8lbs in weight, should I keep hold of them for ballast or send them to the tip (recycling centre)..I know I can't put them in the normal rubbish bin..tut tut!...not allowed and I do try to recycle as much as I can.

I have used a few for ballast before and they can be useful for that.

Keep - dump - or anyone want them? need to collect tho...not posting!!!

JB.

I would re cycle them. I don't know what the chances of them corroding and releasing cadmium is, but why risk it. Lead, iron, cement or whatever your favourite ballast is, are cheap enough.

Hi chas...yes you are right...Cadmium is the worry...I'll send them off soon as possible...don't know why I've kept them really...some were in use not long ago, they developed the black wire trouble!

Thanks for the post :-))

Some supermarkets have a collection box for batteries to be recycled. I'm unsure exactly what they will take but our local cooperative supermarket provides the service. Best to check with them before you go.
