Title: Another ferry build
Post by: hama on November 30, 2017, 06:01:56 pm
Glynn Guests "Lady Helen", with a twist..
Some time ago I received plans and instructions for the above vessel from my good friend Carl. When I a few weeks ago managed to get hold of some balsa at a very reasonable price, I decided to have a go.
She started out to become Hengist/Horsa like, then I found a nice ferry named Chartres so for a while it was her on the building board. But, once again she transformed and finally became one of my childhood memories,  m/s Visby from -72. It' a semiscale model built to 1:200, upperworks will be close enough to the original but the lower hull is out of scale in many aspects.

Funnel under construction..

Post by: hama on December 04, 2017, 09:08:02 pm
The funnel was built up by balsa sheets and strips, then covered with Eze-Kote. Its the first time I use this one part waterbased stuff and I'm very happy with it so far. Very easy to use, no mixing or smell. Dries hard in 30mins and works as epoxy with cloth if you like.
Title: Re: Another ferry build
Post by: hama on December 04, 2017, 09:15:33 pm
The hull has been covered with cloth and Eze-Kote. Probably overkill, especially as the cloth was a bit on the heavy side. I used some I had left from an earlier build. The inside was covered with Eze-Kote only. Feels rock solid!

Ron Rees is also a Stocking officionado (for skinning model boats naturally :O) as well and it does give good results.

Your memory is becoming alive Hama! I salute your mega bundle of balsa, that is almost an industrial quantity of the stuff and you are turning it into a first class model. As well as combining Accupuncture with model making  :-)) :}

Thanks for the tip Klunk! I'l try that one next time. :-))  I think it would have been well suited for this build.
Thanks for the kind words ballasttankian. Yes its satisfying to see the vessel taking shape, and I can't wait to get some colour on her. I think she's a fine looking vessel, the original that is. %)

A little progress;
- Added rubbing streaks
- Started to open up for the stern ramp.
- Cleaned up the inside, removed most of the frames and added bracing to correct a bend in the sb hullside.

I'm going to watch with interest your solution to opening the doors. I saw on the forum last year? somebody doing an opening ramp for a landing craft, you might take a look at how they accomplished it, that is if you haven't already got a solution.
Title: Re: Another ferry build
Post by: hama on December 12, 2017, 07:52:38 pm
Hello Brian!
Well, the visor is more or less done. A lever attched to one of the arms of the visor has a link that will be connected to a servo. You can as the brass lever on the picture. For the ramp I plan to use the same technic I used for the stern ramp on my other ferry, a rod with a hinge. There will be two servos for the bow and one for the stern. Eventually I will show it here.

Smart. A little fast in operation, but that is simple to sort out. The main thing is you have all the bugs sorted and it works. Can't wait to see the full craft in operation.
Title: Re: Another ferry build
Post by: hama on December 13, 2017, 01:47:46 pm
Thanks for your interest Brian, really appreciate it. Well as for the speed of the visor, it' s an easy fix at the moment as it was my hand pulling the linkage {-)  When I have the servo fitted I simply adjust the speed at the transmitter :-))
Put the logo on the funnel today!

Update!
Installed propshafts.
Started to install bowthruster. I will try a pump on this one. Tried it in the sink and I hope it will give enouh push, it is a small boat.
I've made to nozzles that will be installed in the thruster tunnel.

Post by: Brian60 on January 11, 2018, 11:39:52 am
Remember the standard pumps supplied as windscreen washers or for ship fire monitors won't work for this, they are one way operating, you need one that sucks and blows so to speak - the pump should be multidirectional, otherwise you will need two windscreen washer type pumps.
Title: Re: Another ferry build
Post by: hama on January 11, 2018, 08:01:21 pm
Thanks Brian! I have a pump that works both ways, tested it in the sink with hoses and nozzles and it seems to give enough thrust. Time will tell.
All the best!

Made some progress on the ramps. Stern ramp done and bow ramp got it's linkage sorted. Bow ramp got a foldable flap also.
Short vid to show the functions. Again it's me moving the linkage, no servos connected yet.

Does the movable edge of the ramp have it's own servo or does it trip as the ramp fully closes? I like that a lot Hama!
Title: Re: Another ferry build
Post by: hama on January 22, 2018, 09:26:30 pm
Thanks!  :-))
It's the later, when the ramp fully close the flap is pushed down. This is a very small model, 1:200, so the flap is attached to the ramp by two small length of rubberband. Works great! Easy enough to replace when needed I think.
All the best!

Just read this through from the beginning and this is magnificent work my friend!!!! I love what you have done with the plan and it is great to see another ferry emerging.
Folks of Mayhem - if you knew just where Hama has built these boats......the workshop space he has available......you wouldn't quite believe it!  The space is literally the proverbial 'cupboard under the stairs'. To produce such wonderful models in such a small space is testimony to the fact that you do NOT need a fully equipped 5m x 3m shed!!
As the French would say - "Chapeau!" Hakan......... English equivalent : I doff my hat to you!

I made a bad, bad decision to paint the Windows. I had plannd to use tape or decals or something but ended up masking and painting. A lot of painting...When I do some touch up I think the overall look will be ok.

Derek, I know who to call when the ramps start to malfunction  {-)
To be honest,  I'm not sure if the water will stay on the outside if the bow dives in a wave. I have an idea of making a short cardeck on the inside with a bulkhead. Sea trials will tell how it works.

As for wind, she sails away! {-)
Some extra power is crucial to be able to get out of trouble. I expect it to improve a bit when she sits lower in the water. She has good buoyancy thanks to her bulky underwater body.
I doubt I will find rc-cars in 1:200, but it would be cool. %%

I'll keep on adding small details,  it' s a fun part of the build.
I have had two setbacks recently.  The other day I dropped the superstructure and broke the mast and some other things. I managed to repair it all fortunately.
The other thing is the paint on the bow visor keeps cracking.  I've sanded it down and repainted it twice but it comes back. I' m afraid it depends on me trying out a sealer before going for the EzeCote. The other sealer never really cured, luckily I only tried it on the visor. If nothing else I might have to make a new visor some day..

Hi Hakan - Just managed to catch up with your build here........

I am speechless!!!! What an incredible job you have done with such a 'simple' plan.  This is proof, if proof were needed, that it isn't necessarily the expensive kits that can produce satisfactory models.  Your representation has come out spot-on and I am very much looking forward to seeing it in the flesh the next time we visit Vaxholm.  The added details really bring the model to life.

Don't forget to get some shots of her sailing at your club waters please!!!!!

Speak soon friend :-))

PS - I am itching to make a start on Dalaro...........the plans and drawings are my bed-time reading!!!!!

You are right about the details, it makes a lot of difference.
Hope you can come here and have a sail. :-))
I' m planing to visit my club later this month and have a real test sail and I will try to take some pictures.
As for Dalarö, can' t wait to see the start of that build and I know I will get some curious questions about it when I come to the club.I see that your quite busy with your production, it is very interesting to follow your endeavours.

Now that most of the fittings are done it was time for another test sail. It revealed a few things. I had to fix a rattle from port shaft, done I think. I needed to increase her stability a bit to feel safe, also done I think. I rearranged the electronics so I could get more weight down in the hull. She could take some more ballast too, new test sail soon.
All the best!

Post by: hama on May 15, 2018, 10:09:36 am
Thanks both of you,  you are too kind! :embarrassed:
Well, this morning after walking the dog I made a new test sail. She ran perfectly quiet and with good stability, so I am very happy with the outcome. The pump bowthruster works good, a bit noisy. No water at all inside. The bow visor lets water in, but the ramp doesn't and that's perfectly fine. In case of a leaking ramp I made a short length of a cardeck behind the ramp and that is enclosed. Should there leak water behind the ramp it never enters the hull.
Well, I need to fix the ballast and ad some tiny figures I bought and then she is more or less done.
All the best!

I have started to build a new bow visor. My plan is to have a replacement done before I sand down the existing one again. In case of failure in fixing the original i am not lost. I put aluminium foil over the original, then clamped a piece of abs over it and heated it to take the form of the original. Trimmed it at started to ad deck and supports. Not sure yet if it will work, at least I have two options now!

I have modified my linkspan to accommodate the new ferry and tested it today. I have also shortened it to fit in the box I transport this ferry in. I can still use it for the much longer other ferry by adding a section and reposition the fenders. Some slight modifications has been carried out. When the boat was built I realised that I had made a mistake, and as the ambitions grew during the build I decided to correct this. The plans I had was for the sister ship Gotland, she didn't have the aft bridge so I had to guess a bit. What I never knew was that the sister had a bigger sun deck covering almost all of the poop deck while my object had a much shorter sun deck. This affected the overall appearance so I decided to correct it. I' m more than happy that I did this. Also the new visor is almost done, needs a cote of clear lacuer.

The first photo looks like it a seventies photo of a real ferry! I saw your linkspan and reckon it a must for any model ferry builder/owner  :-))

Where did you get the brackets from Hama? They look good.

Thanks Ian!
Yes a linkspan definitely makes sailing the ferry a lot more fun!
I have just made a addition to my linkspan so I can secure it to the lakeside. I'll take some pictures of it later.
The brackets is something I found at home, they are part of hinges for kitchen cabinets.
All the best!

This is how the linkspan look now. The end of the foldable section can be secured to the shore with a weight  ( stone ) or a clamp depending on situation. It also have a add on section if needed. It fits in my box together with the ferry when it' s folded in.

If only you could get hold of grey expanded foam to avoid the annoying white showing through. Hm...….

Yes Ian that would have been great! In fact, you could build this whole structure in a much more scale way. I just took what I had in the house and modified along the way. Again I went for function over accuracy. Perhaps I will make another one some day...
All the best!

Oh no, don't worry Hama, yours is very pleasing as it both provides a spectacle for you and viewers to see a mode ferry doing what it does in real life, and it saves you scraping your paint off the hard edge of the jetty each time you bring her in.

I'm just looking at what you did and adapting it to what I have around or could get hold of to make one for the club. We don't have any ferries per se, but it would be good to see something similar used.

Hello!
I decided to rebuild the hull and make it a little more scale like. Out with the Dremel and start cutting. It's now completed and it's time to reinstall all the gear and make a float test to see how it has affected her buoyancy.
All the best and merry Christmas!
