Title: Looking back.
Post by: Liverbudgie2 on December 31, 2017, 05:17:01 pm
Considering some of the comments being aired of late, perhaps a period of naval gazing and introspection is required.
This being New years Eve it seems to be traditional in the media to look back over the year in image terms. However, on this occasion I shall be looking back a bit further than that.
Some of you might be aware that for a period I reported on and illustrated many of the model boat event's and exhibition's around the country for Model Boats. Until about 2004 all the pictures were taken on film, both negative's and transparencies. The result of this is that I have many  negatives and prints (untold thousands) stored away. I began a projects of scanning the negatives sometime ago but I wore that scanner out but, now I have a new, much more powerful one.
That being the case I'll from time to time and, if there is sufficient interest, put more up.

The first set is from the Cheddar weekend in 1997. This took place at the end of a week that had in many respects, had shaken the country to the core.
Many of the people in pictures are unfortunately, no longer with us, but perhaps a few people will recognise themselves and the models which is more than I can do.

It's not just pictures of models  either %),  model boats that is. I have a great many more pictures of the real thing. Here we have some of the "Clwyd Supporter", taken c.1994. She was built as a Russian deep sea tug in Poland in 1984 and scrapped at Grenaa in 2012/13. She was undergoing a re-refit at Birkenhead at the time.

That's it for this year, regards to all.

The cruiser from memory is HMS Jason and was built by Don Brown, from Hampshire. It was exhibited many times at the ME, Windermere etc.

I assume Don is no longer with us, he was a member of our Berrylands club back in the 70s and stayed in touch for long afterwards but he seems to have just faded away with no one noticing. Like me he built a model of the Fishery Cruser Brenda but by then he was suffering from Parkinson's Disease.

Yes Colin I think he must have gone long ago, quite how he managed to build some of his later models was really quite beyond me. Thinking about it, this is probably the last time I meet him. He and his cousin Derrick were both fine modellers.

I don't think anyone has built a model of one of these interesting vessels so I hope it gives people the inspiration to do so; which is the prime purpose I did and still do these kind of pictures whenever the opportunity arises.

It is interesting LB......I occasionally wondered if the walls so our Captain Cook graving dock could talk  %) ...

Why not take a moment & view the attachment

Derek

extract.....
The dock was ready for initial flooding in September 1944 and pumps allowed the dock to be emptied of its 57,000,000 gallons (259,122,000 litres) of water in about four hours. The construction was sufficiently advanced to allow the emergency docking of HMS Illustrious on 2 March 1945, three weeks before the official opening by the Governor-General, the Duke of Gloucester on 24 March 1945. The graving dock was named in honour of Captain James Cook, R.N

In Pt 3 photo 634, the gentleman to the right of the sign looks very much like the gentleman that had a model show on T.V. if it is I had the pleasure of meeting him at the old LBC studios, I spent most of my shift talking to him, about his life and modeling it did make the night go fast.

Ah yes, I remember these now.

If there is sufficient interest I'll post some more rom the achieve. to start the ball rolling and as I'm becoming a bit tired of working on a Jag rear suspension as well as waiting for parts here are some from the fiftieth anniversary celebrations of the Battle of the Atlantic at Liverpool in late May 1993.

However, before the fleet moved to Liverpool a review took place in Moelfre Bay, Anglesey By HRH Prince Philip and the Crown Prince of Norway. The day dawned and it was grey and wet as well as blowing a gale, 8 -9 at least. it was in doubt until well after we had sailed from Holyhead as to whether the review would take place at all, thankfully it did. Throughout Prince Philip stood on the deck of HMY Britannia taking the salute while wind, rain and spray sheeted across the decks of the ship. However, I was on the bridge of the Irish ferry high above all that, so obtaining some of the best picture of the day. Though, what really annoyed me was that apart from myself, none of the other phots or other hangers on had the good grace to thank the Captain and the other member of the bridge team for allowing us to be there.

Here then are some of the pictures I did that day, many of which have not been published before. I’ll leave you to identify which is which; lets who knows his warships.
