Title: Fisheries Protection Argentinian Style
Post by: Tug Fanatic on January 27, 2018, 11:22:48 am

When around Argentinan ports we noted the very large number of scrapped fishing boats that were being left to rot in the middle of the harbours & wondered why. It was explained to us that the fisheries protection boats arrest the illegal fishing boats & that the fines levied are so high the owners simply abandon them. They are left on public display to warn others & the protection boats carry markers of their "kills" like WW2 bombers.

Owners also just abandon old boats instead of scrapping them down there, My Granda's last big trawler was sold to Argentina in 1973 along with her sistership and both of those finished fishing in the mid 1990's when they were over 35 years old and just abandoned to sink near the main channel of the port , the authorities had a clear out a decade back when both of those boats were hauled out using a crane barge , lifted onto the quay and cut up for scrap
