Title: I can't believe the weather
Post by: Brian60 on February 02, 2018, 04:00:48 pm
Tuesday and Wednesday I was outside in a t shirt building a garden wall with those big concrete blocks ( backache and hamstring pain like you wouldn't believe yesterday) anyway, this weekend I finally pencilled in for spraying my current build and what happens today??

Yep, snow in Spain and so cold I have had to snap our dog off of a fence post!

Don't feel bad we have had-23/30 below for more than two weeks & in the last two days added to the insult by dropping 3 FT. of snow as well.  we have to clear the footpath (city property) within 24 hrs. or get a ticket. We can't park on the street if it is a bus  route. If you do make it to the street  you have a good chance of being ambushed by our world Famous bad drivers. The main drag which is Deerfoot had 480 crashes in a 12 hour period (34 serious) so the road had to be closed, It has been pure Mayhem. So if you want to be a Kamikaze come to Calgary for the winter. Don't even think of doing you know what outside or you may still be there come spring. Mick in the frozen wilds of Canada

Mick could migrate out to the great west (wet) coast - been lucky so far this winter that only gallons of rain to deal with.
Today we saw sunshine - some fool down the street insisted on cutting his grass!

The Lismore forecast for today is 37 and possible storm
Meanwhile in Melbourne it is blowing a gale, thunderstorm and 24 degrees
So much for the advertising when we were thinking of emigrating from UK  {:-{ <:(

I managed, with the assistance of a free portable evaporative cooler from marketplace, to keep this tin pizza oven that the locals here in Canberra call a garage down to a comfortable 32°C. Yesterday.

Been averaging just over 40C here for the last week or thereabouts, and a couple of weeks ago we topped 45.8c. Hottest day this summer, so far.
As I type this, it's showing 40.6, so there's not much getting done outside, or in the shed, which gets to around 38 mid afternoon, and it's way too big to try and cool.
Aircon in the house is getting a hell of a work out at the moment! And with the hot weather the solar panel performance drops by up to 30% or thereabouts, so it's not going anywhere near covering the aircon power consumption.

Hi Ian
Solar panels work well in the lower 20's !!!

My total output has hit 45,000KW and my first power bill in two years was $2.02 AU.
Back in credit for this three months.
Weather today 100 KPH winds and rain storms !!!

Not bragging Brian, merely telling it like it is O0  It almost reached 37 yesterday, and very humid with it, typical February weather for this part of the country, quite uncomfortable. Today is forecast to be 33 so not so bad, but the humidity is still high, and that's what I don't like. We are in a sub-tropical area though, so must expect it. Even after over 60 years living in this part of NSW I still don't like the humidity, and it seems worse the older one gets. Not long now however, in a month or so the temperature will drop below 20, and we'll all be complaining about the cold :o {-)

...."total output has hit 45,000KW" .....so me, just trying to understand  :embarrassed:

Here in NSW, we are getting so much distorted advertising claiming we will save $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

So is the following the correct way to understand you solar system {ballpark} output?

two years = 730 [days]
45000 divided by 730 - 81
81 divided by 24 [hours per day] =2.56 kW hour.....[average electricity in kW you put back into the system?]

G'day Canabus,

You must have got in early with your panels, and you would be on either 60 cents or 44 cents per kWh. I was a later starter and I was only getting 6 cents like many others, but recently threatened to take my business away and they generously upped it to 15 cents. Better than it was, but still not great. The Solar has reduced my bills by about 50%, and I'm classified as a big exporter, with a total export of over 17,150kWh. It would actually be more than that, as I had an Inverter fail and was replaced under warranty, so the previous performance recorded on that would have been lost.

Peter,
We have it much hotter over the range from you, but at least there's very little humidity, and like you, I don't like it either.
Broken Hill or Lightning Ridge are good places to avoid it, and after a hard day of sweating, you don't stink, as it just dries off quickly leaving little or no BO.
Ian.

Post by: Ianlind on February 14, 2018, 09:54:17 pm
Derek,
Your figures are incorrect, as it depend on your number of panels, I have 12 for a max of 3KW, but you rarely get to peak performance, due to variables like temp, cloud etc. The hotter it is, the less you generate, as Canabus mentions in his post.  Canabus mentioned a total of 45,000kWh, but not over any particular period, if I got it right. To not have a power bill, you have to be on the early FIT schemes where the brilliant government was buying the power for either 60 cents or 44 cents and then selling it back at up to 32 cents. Clever people!
The best way to use the system is to use the power as it's generated, by running your machinery while the sun is shining.
Once it's exported they now give me 15 cents, but when I need to buy it back it costs me around 32 cents, and until late last year I was only getting 6 cents feed in.
I'll do another post late today after I get my days performance, as I'm not smart enough to know how to check past performance on the inverter.

And you are right about the misleading advertising, although it does pay itself off over time, and if you use it to best advantage.
Ian.

Hi All
I have had my solar for 1999 days as of today, but, I only started with eight 190 Watt panels.
I have 20 panels now, which is the limit of the inverter.
I am on 28 cent per KW, but, the State Government(both sides of the fence) with our supplier have drop it to about 7 cents as of this year some time.
We have an election this year and 40,000 solar people are not happy!!!

We are the clean green state(BULL - - - -) !!!!!! ?????

Canabus....I know one of the Golden Rules is to never present any Political retroetic  8)......

So how did Ms Jacquie view your power position?...did she have a green disposition?

Any female solder willing to king hit an Officer [for trying to put hard words on her] would get my vote

Has Ms Jacquie resolved who her grandparents were?

Keeping a low profile on this thread....[Peter up north] would be the only one understanding this post  :o

Oh my god -I find 20 degC hot here.  Thailand at 32 in wet season was pretty uncomfortable and 45 in the Gulf of Mexico with 100% humidity was just unbearable wetness in a boiler suit and hard hat, moisture apearing from every pore and puddle you took a step in, fantastic lightning storms.  Rain water puddles don't evaporate and when you step outside its like having a bucket of water tipped on your head.  I have yet to experience a dry heat apart from on my DSV where we switched off the ventilation fans overnight to allow a new heater battery to be fitted to the HVAC system.  38deg in my cabin that night with no air flow whatsover.

...While the "bad" winter was on in 2010, UK was complaining of -10 or 20 so we were at -40oC in Finland and while unusually cold -just plodded on regardless.  It was a dry cold though.  Nothing much above -20 for weeks on end and less than 6hrs daylight didn't help.

I'd take too cold than hot any day!!!!  I can always put on more clothes in the cold, but anything after about 19"C nobody wants to see my man-boobs and me in my pants.  Worst thing for me in any heat is I just feel sick and dizzy like really  bad seasickness.  I take my hat off to you useed to it!

Hi Derek
I have not ask Ms Jacquie her view on the power position.
As for king hitting an Officer, good on her.
Yes her grandparents question resolved.
She is a straight shooter.
Peter may have a word, but, I have had my say.
I think it is best to drop the subject on this forum site.

Derek,

Just read the meter at 1920, and I generated 18.05kWh for the day. So that works out at a whole $2.71 at 15 cents per kWh. Or $1.08 @ 6 cents, and that's what Canabus has to look forward to when they drop his FIT rates to 7 cents.
That's why it takes so long to get your investment back!

Hi All
Unless you are installing 4KW system plus with a solar hot water system you will not see a great drop in your power bill.
If you have a larger inverter installed first up adding panels is plug in only plus more mounting strips.
I replaced the halogen down lights with LED ones (50 WATT down to 7 WATTS).
Our three bedrooms only have single lights so I am using watt saver globes.
The garage/ workshop has four cool white flo tubes.
I may try a LED one to see what they are like.
Other than the last bill of $2.02 my last bill was in August 2015 for $85.85.
At my last job we had a solar installer electrician so I picked up some good info on solar.

When we were thinking of emigrating we were tossing up between Canada and Oz.
One of my wife's sisters (They come from sunny Mauritius) who had been studying in Montreal, came to visit and her tales of living in the snow made Australia the only choice.
Mind you we still occasionally think of suing the Australian government for false advertising.  <*<
Current ABC news:-
"Townsville had recorded 150 millimetres of rain since 9:00am on Wednesday until 5:00am today, with some places to the north recording up to 300mm."
And there has not even been a cyclone!

We seem to have had a charmed life so far here in South West Surrey south east of Guildford. Just on the edge of the 'Beast from the East' and also on the edge of storm Emma so while we have had some persistent snow it has only settled for an inch or so. Yesterday when the sun was shining I was sunbathing in the conservatory in 21 degrees while the other side of the patio door it was just 1 degree. Weird feeling.
