Title: Maid of Scotland
Post by: Cargo on September 09, 2007, 08:01:50 pm
Now that i am starting and getting the feeling that shes now my boat and not Martins and Bradders anymore, i start a new thread about it. Again many thanks to them!

We started today the repair, it will be a bit picture-heavy  ;)

Lets start with the damages and repairs...

The roof was broken and the Master lost his left arm. Never had any chance gluing that arm without removing the roof. Smartly Martin left the wire of the roof lamp long enough  ;)

Title: Re: Maid of Scotland
Post by: Cargo on September 09, 2007, 08:05:55 pm
The roof itself was glued and "epoxyid" back...

Title: Re: Maid of Scotland
Post by: Cargo on September 09, 2007, 08:11:53 pm
The ladder was broken, now soldered together...

Title: Re: Maid of Scotland
Post by: Cargo on September 09, 2007, 08:15:28 pm
The row boat was also damaged, now repaired.

Title: Re: Maid of Scotland
Post by: Cargo on September 09, 2007, 08:30:57 pm
The funnel is not ready and the rudder needs now 24 hours to let the glue dry. But the chaintubes and the mainswitch are glued back allready. The rest of the repair follows...  8)

Willy........ BRILLIANT!  :o

.......... and Jan didn't have to wait another 10 years  :embarrassed:

All you need now to ballast the boat is all the lead off the local church!

Hello friends,

tomorrow we will execute a swimming-test of the buffer.... Pictures follow.

I trimmed (in the bathtub  )  the ship, however without further ballast as the 2 lead accumulators.... the trip-attempts will then show what still is possible in order to get a trip-picture of a badly laden buffer.... let's look once...

Title: Re: Maid of Scotland
Post by: Cargo on September 16, 2007, 07:44:23 pm
Here is the story so far from today...

Her bum is wet, looked well on the water. But some difficulties occured. So lets start with the nice part...
Title: Re: Maid of Scotland
Post by: Cargo on September 16, 2007, 07:49:34 pm
Shes very top-heavy, the whellhouse is very heavy. The main batteries are placed as low as possible, together they weight 5.6 Kg. If there is no wind she sails fine, but turning in some fresh winds...

Title: Re: Maid of Scotland
Post by: Cargo on September 16, 2007, 07:56:01 pm
I think we need some more weight down below.

Other problems: the esc gets to hot, needs to be replaced. And the Smoke-Generator needs a fan.

Shes to fast, engine with 3.000 rpm rather than the 5.500 now should be fine.

Haven't got the pictures to hand but took mine out - it was very choppy, I had to bring the Aziz in before it did a "Kenny"

The highlander does sway a lot in the waves - alarmingly so. I had water on the decks with mine ballasted onto the waterline. I winder if it has more to do with the shape of the boat - the bulk of the weight of mine is below the waterline.

I think its the shape of the hull and the white-metal parts. Maybe Mountfleet Models should change them to resin. The wheelhouse is very heavy  ???
Title: Re: Maid of Scotland
Post by: Martin (Admin) on September 17, 2007, 10:45:47 am

Hi Jan......
Hmmm! Not good.  :(
Did you you try It without the wheelhouse to see if it made any difference?

What are other peoples experiences of ballasting the Mountfleet Highlander Puffer?

Martin.

Nice looking Puffer Jan.
I am so jealous need to get on with mine. All the  pictures I have seen of a puffer they always seem to be very low in the water, up to the top rubbing strip. Heaven knows what they were like in heavy seas. I do think the superstructure and the wheelhouse are a bit on the heavy side, well they are on my Sealight. The superstructure is quite a thick grp moulding.

Post by: Cargo on September 23, 2007, 11:45:07 pm
The wheelhouse alone weights 0.77 Kg  :o

Willy has the puffer again, some more lead will be placed low in the hull. Hope this might help a bit  O0

I had a look at the plans for my puffer (Sealight) and the water line is just below the angle of the top rubbing strip. Where is the water line for your pufer shown on the plans?

What is the problem Martin.... I something wrong made?

The wheelhouse has a weight of ca. 750 gram.... additional load approx.. ca. 7150 gram.... this results in one puts up quotients of 1:9 (theoretically)

Hello my Lords

Jan's buffer is currently in my small yard. The smoke has been improved. I've installed two 12V PC fan, one was throttled to 6V for a replica, model without driving. The other fan is an electonic components - a bridge - from the drive motor supply depends on the speed with power. The function is given in forward and reverse. Accordance to increase the speed or the low protective smoke emissions.

Here are a few pictures, as I have solved it:

After getting out of the prison (bribed the judge with some crates of Scotch) we sailed the "Maid" back to my homewaters. I removed the Rx and sold it with the whole remote (40MHz Graupner MC-12). Now i switch her to 2.4 Ghz with a Spektrum DX5e.
