Anyone know where I can get some plans for a steam yacht? Have tried the net, but most of the boats were one-offs and built early nineteen hundreds, so no original builders left, the sort of yacht is based on any of these, "Vanadis, Medea, North Star and Giralda". I have had a change of direction with a hull I have bought so making something more gentile :-) Thanks FF

Thanks but they are small boats, the ones Iam thinking of modeling are 100/300 Ft long, they were owned by the Vandenbergs, J P Morgan, very wealthy gentlemen, at the turn of the century, Ill keep looking. FF

Deans does models of S.Y. Medea and the S.Y. Komet (HMAS Una) check with them to see if they'll sell the plans separately.

There is not much point in trying to get hold of kit plans as they are often only representative drawings, not to scale and omit vital details such as body plans.
James Pottinger drew the plans for Greta of 1898 which are available from Sarik. The model is 44 inches long https://www.sarikhobbies.com/product/steam-yacht-greta-mm1036/

The Sarik Giralda plan is of the Thames Barge. A model of the steam yacht Giralda is in the collections of the Science Museum, London but no longer on display. I don't know where you would find plans.

The Brunel Institute at Bristol has a comprehensive set of 1:48 scale plans of the Steam Yacht Nerissa of 1885 built by Alexander Stephens & Sons.

Thanks again, Deansmarine will sell me the two plans for "Medea & Komet" will try the Brunel institute "Giralda" was also on my list. There is a fair bit of info out there but because of the era the photos are all from Ground/sea level, the above named models that are in collections etc will probably be my best source of material along with a couple of deck plans, as said its not a particular ship Iam building just a representation of the type, now if I had some Euro millions in the bank!!! :} :} FF

I have built the Deans Medea kit and the drawings are not suitable for building a scale model. There is no body plan as a hull is supplied with the kit. The drawings themselves are not accurate as firstly, compromises have had to be made to accommodate the manufacturing process and secondly, Medea has been extensively altered over her long life and the Deans kit doesn't seem to represent any particular period. There is no real detail on the anchoring arrangements for example. I did end up with a lovely looking model which sails well but in all honesty I felt it was more of a generic Gentleman's yacht and renamed it.
If you want a reasonably accurate representation of this type of vessel then you could use either Giralda or Greta plans as a basis and perhaps the Nerissa model in the Science museum as a 3D source of information on typical fittings. Their photos may be sufficient but you can still view the models by appointment should you wish to.

Several years ago I made a similar boat to what you intend to do.
At the time I had obtained from the library a book entitled, if I recall correctly, 'Edwardian Steam Yachts From Old Glass Slides'. It did not have drawings but provided a good background from which to take ideas from. I used images of a yacht named Zaida from the book and the drawings of Greta referred to above. The F/G hull, made by a friend was based on the Miranda river launch hull.

Sorry about the poor quality of the pics but they are all I have on file. The boat sailed regularly before being cased and now sits in the bedroom!
