Title: Thornycroft 43ft Range Safety Launch
Post by: Piers Grabeard on March 03, 2018, 11:16:48 am
I see considerable correspondence in the past regarding the RAF 43ft RSL. I built one about 10 years ago at 1:8.6 scale, ie., 60 inches in length. I built it in entirely in aluminium (the real one had the superstructure in aluminium) and it remained 80% finished until recently. I see in the correspondence (I'm new to Model Mayhem) there is reference to AP4554 Vol 1 and Marine Craft Directory Appendix B which probably will contain the extra detail I need to finish my model. I have tried every internet lead to locate a copy of either, including many so-called sources to no avail. None of them answer their 'message us' page and specific people with this information do not reply to e-mails. Does anyone out there still have either of these documents who could either sell, or e-mail me scannned copies?  I would specifically like any info on number 1663 (1663E) which is the least photographed, only 2 pictures, and was lost in 1959. It is the one I am modelling. Many thanks, Peter.

Hi Peter, and welcome to the Mayhem.

I may be able to help you in your hunt for information on RSL 1663E as I have a copy of Directory Appendix B (I believe that they are very scarce now that the Small Craft Group has ceased). I’m deployed for another two weeks with the RAF but when I return I’ll fetch the Directory out and scan the relevant information for you. Hope that will help you complete your build. :-))

Hi Peter

I’ve just fetched out the Directory about the  RSL’s. I have got the history of the RSL and three grainy b&w photos, two are of her ‘sunk’ at Lyme Regis.
The entire directory has an in depth photo section on building and fittings. Is there anything in particular you would like information on?
I’ll scan the two pages referring to 1663E for you but there really isn’t much as the only major difference were the gearboxes.

Thankyou for taking the time. I would especially like the three quarter cut-away line drawing. I have it as it appeared somewhere else where it was photographed from the RAF Marine Craft class Directory Appendix B at an angle rather than scanned, and it is also rather fuzzy.  That is the publication I have tried just about everywhere to purchase, but no luck so far. Also the 3 photographs and any interior views if they exist. I chose 1663E as it bore the Experimental suffix E, Which I know had been applied to RAF craft built in that era from aluminium. As my model is entirely aluminium I thought it would be appropriate. It also had contra rotation propellers which mine will have.  Thanks again, Peter

Hi Peter

Is this the sort of thing you’re after? If so I’ll do a quality scan to your email address of these pages.

That's perfect!  I look forward to receiving them. What happened to 1663? Was it gathered up and removed in pieces?

I'm also interested in the 43ft RSL, but I'm trying to track down General Arrangement drawings plus lines and body plans, all for the full size original. Does anyone have access to such please?

Many thanks

Andy
