Hello what is the best grey to use for a type
42. Hull deck and superstructure
In the past I have used humbrol
147 this is very light with a hint of blue
Or Tamika xf80 which is a darker grey
Not sure about the the dark grey for the deck though

I have always ordered from specialist suppliers the correct BSI paint hull and upper works in BSI 381-381C light weather work grey and decks BSI
381-640 extra dark sea gray. work a treat I also have a pussers tin of each HMS Illustrious, which is where I got the BSI numbers.

I have done the same. Just remember to specify matt or satin finish, otherwise you may end up slightly too glossy.
I have also used Humbrol 127, which in my immensely humble opinion is a slightly better choice than 147, but I could be wrong ok2
Deck grey, anything from Humbrol 67 Tank Grey through to 27 Sea Grey, not forgetting 62 Leather for all the rust......much weathering is soon evident on the decks.

Having built 3 Type 42's 2 in 1/96 and one in 1/72 I find that Humbrol M27 for the Decks and M64 for the superstructure will do your needs just right. Jack.

Currently building a T42 and I use Humbrol Satin 127 for the hull and superstructure, plus Matt 27 for the decks. Jon

Humbrol 64 is much closer to BS381C-694 Dove Grey and is not similar to BS381C-676 Light Weatherworks Grey. Humbrol 64 is much yellower than Light Weatherworks Grey.

By contrast, Humbrol 127 claims to be Ghost Gray, which is Federal Standard 595 FS36320. This is noticably darker and bluer than BS381C-676 Light Weatherworks Grey:

I have decided to use the bs 381c 676 light upper weather works for my 1/96 type 42 . I want to use my airbrush rather than aerosols, but the paint
Suppliers just seem to supply automotive type paints that are not model friendly, colourcoats do the paint in 14ml tins but sovereign models
Only have 6 tins (would this be enough to paint the ship this would be thined 50/50 so like 12 tins)
Alternatively does anybody know where I could get some model paint mixed up either enamal or acrylic that I can airbrush and mix with modell type thinner

Your friendly local specialist automotive paint supplier should be able to supply alternative paint types for your use. I use these guys, very good..

Best option would be to talk to your local supplier and explain your needs, such as thinning down for use through an airbrush rather than a professional spray gun, brush on options, plus of course, the odd can of aerosol as shown in the link.
I got an enamel based paint, although I don't think it was described as such. Certainly thinned down with the same thinners I use on Humbrol enamels. Straight out of the pot, it was thick enough to fill micro air bubbles in the resin castings!

Try dropping colorcoats a line, Jamie has started producing some paint in 125mls tins.

HI again on the subject of the type 42 well for paint I always use humbroll matt light grey no 64 in a spray an it looks great as ive seen an talked to fellow moddelers up Norwich pond an most of them aggree on the paint above but I notice as well its how the sunlight catches the model when sailing it seems to change colour slightly an ive noticed that on the real ships when I was down in Portsmouth goin round the ships on a water taxi with my wife hope this helps .But its up to you
