Hi All,
Can anyone suggest a speed controller for my tug please?
The tug is a springer scaled up by 25%, the motor is an Mtroniks M600, batteries are 12V SLA.
I was using an Mtroniks Viper Marine ESC, but that started emitting clouds of noxious smoke last time I connected the battery to it...

Sounds like a case of reverse polarity
if the unit smoked on connecting to
power source.
Any fuses should have protected it if
it was on load when it happened.

I am assuming the sla's are in parallel
and not inadvertently in series.

Stall current of the motor is 27 amps, so any speed controller with a sensible margin over that will be ok.
Mtronics, electronize and Action are all popular for good reasons.
How big is the propeller ? And is it a direct or geared drive?
Others will disagree, but I would avoid Chinese speed controllers, especially for this motor.
Always connect the battery right way round, the magic smoke you had is familiar to too many of us.

I'm using a 45mm prop, direct drive.
I definitely didn't connect the batteries the wrong way round, so not sure why it blew up.
The only change I made was to add a small fan next to it as I felt it was getting a bit warm.
I'll have a look at electronize and action thanks.
