Title: Who makes the smoke unit that runs only on water?
Post by: Voyager on September 11, 2007, 12:31:22 am
Sorry for the missunderstanding in my previous thread (now removed!), didn't mean to cause any bad feelings!

Ok! I just want to know of the makers name who makes the smoke unit that runs purely on water? Has anybody got one and how does it compare to the Graupner units? I have purchased the smaller 6v Graupner smoke unit in the past, however i found that they didn't last very long before they run out of oil. I haven't tried the larger 12v Graupner smoke unit, so don't know if it's any good or how long the oil last for?

Any advice would be great!!!

Regards: Voyager

Hello Voyager
JJC make the old smokey it runs very well with lots of smoke and is easy to set up, probably easier to get one from westbournes as JJC can be difficult to get hold of. Dave

Voyager you can fit a secondary supply to the graupner 6 v unit so it last longer of course this is dependant on your set up and so on we have in the past used cartridge refill syringes and a cigar tube on occasion disguised as a secondary funnel, and you can buy the oil for the graupner units on its own a large 250 ml bottle is just under a tenner, appreciative not as cheap as water (unless you are under Thames water) but that way you make the most of what you have bought

The most significant advantages of the JJC unit are:

1) It does not generate heat, thereby using considerably less battery power.

2) It produces copious quantities of 'smoke', far in excess of any of the oil based units.

3) It is electronically controlled such that the diesel version on start up produces a 'puff' of smoke and the diesel and steam versions make more smoke the faster the motor is going.

4) Consumable items are nothing more than water, no more buying oil.

5) It doesn't make an awfull smell!

Disadvanages are the initial cost and the fact that it requires more space in the hull than the oil burning units.

Your first step is to determine whether the unit will fit in the hull without compromising stability when containing water.  If it will not fit then you have no choice than to use an oil unit.  If it does fit there is no contest for me.

I have attached two shots of the same model for you to compare.  The first one is smoke from an oil based unit and the second one is from a Mk1 JJC unit.

Thanks all for the info O0 I do prefer the look of the JJC in action, looks much more realistic than the Graupner model. I don't suppose you can remember how much the JJC units costs by any chance? Oh...one more thing, how long does the water last with the JJC?

They are about £50.
Not sure if Westbourne are still selling JJC stuff.
Not sure how long they last between fills but it just a simple job to bring the boat along side and pour in some more water down the funnel.
