different densities, you get the same effect off the River Tyne mouth when Kielder opens the sliuces. nemesis

I have seen this a number of times in the Gulf of Mexico while fishing. In that case it is caused by different currents flowing counter to each other. You can actually stop your boat with the bow in green water and the stern in blue water. And it's good fishing there. :-))

I believe the biggest area of this phenomena is at the mouth of the River Plate, where also by chance is the last resting place of the Graf Spee.

One of the weird ones that will never appear on youtube is the Bosphorus. The surface flows north to south but there is a strong current down below flowing the other way. Difficult to make a film of, though, but it is caused by different levels of salinity.

Seen it many times here at Newhaven. Fresh water comes down the Ouse and meets sea water outside the harbour. Not as dramatic as this video, but the same thing.

Same as Malcolm, water flows like that at the Med entrance, subs used the water run to gain entry and exit to the Med during the war. That is why the straits of Gibralter were heavily patrolled. nemesis
