Title: Boatbuilder who's new to RC
Post by: Seasabre on April 08, 2018, 05:13:50 pm
Hi Everyone,

Thanks for accepting me on here. :-)

I'm a boat builder/engineer by trade and have also built a few models, but never radio controlled anything.
A little project I've been weekending on with my 5 year old son is a 1 metre model of an Ocean Rowing Boat (ORB) that I build for my day job. On doing a bit of research on the interweb I stumbled across this forum and thought it might be good to share pics with you of what I'm up to. Perhaps you would be so kind to let me know if I'm doing anything daft!

My plan is to fit a water jet drive in the centre of the hull and run a tube through the hull to just in front of the skeg/rudder arrangement. I'm not worried about not being able to reverse  :-)
I'm also going to run small tubes to take the rudder control lines (or rods?!) through to the central deck area so I can concentrate all the weight here and then just have one large waterproof access hatch to fit/replace all of the kit.
As per standard ORB designs it will self right so should be good for going out in some fairly choppy conditions. You can probably tell, I'm quite keen to test this!

Anyway I don't have much idea of what kit would do the job and any pointers in this respect would be gratefully received!

By my roughish calculations I need about 50w of power to push it along at 3.5kts. I guess the rudder servo will need to be fairly robust as well but again, I don't really know where to start!

I've tried to upload a pic but can't seem to work out how to do it. Is it possible?

I hope this is of interest!

Thanks,
Justin

Welcome to the forum Justin - The fact that you live in a place called Beer gets my vote  :-)

Hi Mark, thanks and yes, Beer is a nice little place to live!

Do you know if I can post a pic or two on here? It would be nice to show you what I'm up to for starters!

Justin

Yes - the forum has its own Image Hosting Site. Hopefully this link will give you the necessary information.

You can also add up to ten images via the 'Attachments and other options'* button and add them from your picture folders as long as they are reduced to (optimally) 8000x600 pixels.

Some people do this after writing a list of what the photos show, I.e.

Photo 1. Boat from the front
Photo 2. Boat from the side

etc etc.
You cannot see them in preview, but as long as the codes appear in the spaces that you will see appear on opening*, they will show once you post your message.

Thank you Barrie!

Here's a test and if it works I'll put a few more up.

Hopefully this will be the first pic of the waterline sections before I glued them together!

Thank you also ballastanksian!

Well, it worked! So here are a few more.

1) A drawing of my idea for the water jet and the tube
2) Pic of said jet in the hull. Bought it on ebay to check it for size. I'm not adverse to upgrading if a better one exists!
3) Hull with cabins in place, not glued together though.
4) The hull and cabin male moulds before covering in parcel tape and laminating over.
5) The hull only
6) Sections glued together and half the hull shaped
