Ive seen some outrunner motors fitted with an external cooling fan. can you purchase these separately or do they only come part and parcel with certain motors?
I don't have space to fit a cooling plate on the nose of the motor, due to the drive setup, but plenty of free space on the back end.

thanks Martin, but was thinking more of one that actually bolts to the end of the motor casing, so it spins as it rotates, ok so creates a bit of drag, but would draw air through the coils moreso, rather than bolt in something that's going to draw on the batteries, plus dare say wont keep speed with the revs of the motor.

On the outrunner that I am looking at, putting a fan on the drive end would do nothing whatever except add drag. Its the mounting plate that needs cooling since that is the bit that the coils heat, and there is nowhere between the rotating part and the plate for a fan - even if there was, a fan needs somewhere for the air to come from as well as somewhere to go.
A computer CPU fan constantly running could ensure airflow over the motor. The fact that its speed would be independent of the motor doesn't matter, in fact it would be a benefit since maximum cooling is needed when the motor is pulling hard and slow and a motor fan is at its least effective.

is there room to put a bigger (home made) motor mount in? maybe with a heatsink attached close to the motor.

sorry to say, but the motor bolts to a drive plate, and straight on to a water jet drive, hence no room to play with at the drive end.
that's why I was looking for an in stock supplier of item in attached image.

Can you get in with a small computer fan rotor ?
I've been successful with 30mm rotors , drilled smaller than the splined adaptor on the motor & pressed on ( tho you have to get the adaptors with the narrow undercut at the back of the spline or it just drops off the end )

Even with sustained high speed running barely gets warm . . .
