Title: Warspite plans
Post by: dreadnought72 on May 07, 2018, 02:26:06 pm
Battleship Warspite (https://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Battleship-Warspite-Hardback/p/14024)

...Detailed in the Original Builders' Plans, Seaforth Publishing.

This makes a bit of a mockery of the NMM pricing policy, if the contents are as good as advertised.

Guess it really depends on paying £50 for 1/96 from NMM or working from a book and scaling up, horses for course I think.

Are NMM not all 1/48th and £hundreds?

I've got the book ordered - will post a review when I've got it.

I thought the NMM stopped selling drawings?

They have - just sell you copies now 8) Not cheap by any means but indispensable if you want to build a nice model of your subject; there are other museums in Newcastle, Glasgow and Dundee who can supply drawing's as well to my knowledge.

I have the book already and you won’t be disappointed with it, hopefully the next two books will be just as good- the Cruiser Birmingham and Aircraft Carrier Victorious.

Just out of curiosity how much is it now for NMM copies? The last set I bought cost approximately £17.50 per drawing + postage + research cost.

Were these for Invincible Nick? Those I bought for Cochrane were about the same back in 2014 plus a handling charge and postage.

I got the gist that they went up in price in the last year or two.

Hi Ian

I’ve only got the Sambrook plans for the Invincible and the foldout sheets in the British Battlecruisers book.
The last set I bought were for HMS Adamant and HMS Powerful when they were about £17.50 per plan, I’m curious as to what that has increased to.

I also have the Warspite book and its really quite good with lots of detail. No photo's if I remember but I'm very pleased with the book. For my model of Iron Duke I contacted the Maritime museum at Greenwich and found them extremity helpful and responsive.

I believe they only do the plans at 1/48 scale now so no scaling (but I could be wrong). The complete set for Iron Duke works out at £388 (2013 prices and circa £21.60 per sheet) but consists of 20 sheets. There was also a £12 research handling fee and £8.40 postage to be added on.

Needless to say I didn't purchase them all and got three sets - hull lines, forecastle and main deck which worked out at £85.20 so not cheap at all.

It should be noted that these are real plans and not model plans so there is a lot of interpretation involved but they are very detailed. They are printed in black and white but on the originals (see Warspite book) they are in colour. The point here is that the original plans were often overdrawn in different colour ink to show changes but the black and white copies make interpretation challenging.

You still need to check dimensions as the fore bulkheads maximum width was 1/8" difference from the aft bulkheads maximum width which show some distortion has taken place in the original plans.

I also had the Sambrook ID plans so in conjunction could build a scale model.

Cheers

Geoff

The Review:

The same height, but slightly wider than an A4 sheet of paper, the hardback "Battleship Warspite detailed in the original builders' plans" contains 144 pages of pure awesome.  :-)) I suspect it'll slurp up more than a few hours of careful studying. Virtually every page has colour copies of the original builders' plans (where the Warspite's are no longer in existence, sister-ships are used). These are annotated throughout, and often cross-indexed to other pages where there's the opportunity to provide more detail. As a bonus, a double-page, fold-out elevation is present.

All plans appear to be scaleable - that is, you can measure off the four-foot frame spacing where shown, or use the deck height measurements that are present, to allow for re-drawing the ship at the scale (and period) of your choice. The additional text is pretty much exhaustive for the ship, her evolution and history: top marks to Robert Brown and Seaforth Publishing.

It's been many years since I was last impressed so much by a book on naval subjects (that was "HMS Dreadnought" in the Anatomy of the Ship series) and if this series continues in the same vein, I don't think readers will be disappointed.

Could I use Ross Watton's (slightly patchy) Anatomy of the Ship book on "Warspite" to make a decent model from scratch? Not quite, I think: it lacks in a few crucial areas. This Original Builders' Plans fills in all that missing info and more. That said, don't buy this thinking you'd be cutting a model Warspite's keel in five minutes. It's definitely a scratch-builder's book for someone who doesn't mind a lot of re-drawing/CAD work.

...Which is me!

Five stars, for sure.

NMM drawings are at 1/96, Victorious came to £50 digital, so easy to scale up.  Well worth a visit to the plans section, very helpful and very keen on their role.  Will defo be getting next set from there.

When you say digital it’s sent as file on your computer?

Sounds like a much better quality version of Profile morskie plans.

A couple of plans I recently bought were e-mailed to me as high definition but some of the text is blurred and I am thinking of going back to the NMM and asking for them to tell me what is actually written.  Especially as they cost £70 for the first and £50 for the second - and we are not talking battleships as the subject!

Might be the plans themselves mine came in at 1/96 no prob and as I said £50, having viewed the plans some of them seem a bit beyond scanning, depends i suppose on age and subject also the material the original was printed. Vic has them on paper and acetate, all with varying finishes

Even coming in 1:96th scale, I would want to make sure they really were so, and without distortion etc. I had copies of the warrior class reproduced 'to 1:96th scale' and they were all slightly different.

I am thinking to build the hull a close as possible to scale via calculating dimensions from the plans and then make the superstructure etc fit.
