Hi all I have had plans of the steam tug Joffre for some years now and never got round to a start on it till now ,so here goes I will not be showing bit by bit detail as it has been described well on this forum previously in masterclasses, however this build is scratch built will be 4 ft long with Yarrow boiler ,engine not decided yet please feel free to ask questions.

Thanks Derek Ive gone a bit further with the planking finished and ready for GRP also mde a start on the Yarrow boiler but had a practice run with copper rods and very happy with the result ,the copper rods will braze to brass with suitable flux.

Hi and thanks for your kind comments yes t's a yarrow boiler copper brazed not too difficult a job mostly lining everything up but must confess I would not have attempted it without some great advise on this great forum ,in particular George ooyah2 who kindly sent me many good images and construction details.
The boiler holds approx 1 ltr water so a small engine driven pump will keep up with demand.

Hi all I am contemplating no pun intended doing simulated hull rivets ,never tried this so need some feedback from you guys ,I have a pic similar to Joffre which gives me some idea where the plates fit so has anyone used aluminium drink cans ? ,if so how are the pltes glued to the hull?CheersJohn

I have never used alli cans, but have seen the results of litho plates from a printers being used and glued on with epoxy resin.
however I have myself used 120 gram card/paper for plating which gives good results, and I used sanding sealer to seal from water...……
but now with the modern 2 part finishing epoxy painted over the exterior card plates have seen great results and superb watertight finishes on card...…….saves cutting your fingers on sharp alli cans.

Hi guys its been a while since last posting ut back to work on the Joffre.
lucky a good friend at our men shed is into 3d printing and kindly offered to try and make a prop .
Downloaded 2 files and a long story short came up with a 85 mm scale brass prop ,still have a fair bit of cleaning up and polishing but very happy with the result.
Next job some laser cut panels for her wheel house

How did I miss this update???? Our tugs are so similar John and yours is looking great. Have you tested your boiler with a motor yet??

Thanks Mark I thought may have posted in the wrong place but anyhow yes tested the yarrow with a twin cyl which worked really well on the bench so now I am finishing the engine for the Joffre with the same 1/2 in bore 3/4 stroke and is based on the cheddar proteous so should be ok so lookout for more posts

Thanks Derek just have to finish the steam chest and it will be test time as all other parts have been completed valves eccentrics etc
