Title: Beacon lamps
Post by: misog on July 12, 2018, 04:32:38 pm
Maybe i should have put this under "Black Arts" but i thought it would get more air time here. Mods feel free to move.

Has any one tried to slow the rotation of off the shelf beacon lamps, you know the blue lamps favoured by uncle plod, without dimming the lamp.

The reason I'm asking is that we at York mbc are building a stand off scale model of the spurn lightship to protect a hazard to shipping at our sailing water namely a pipe just below the water surface. We did have a floating island with lighthouse, but some thing or some one took objection to it and we didn't find many remains.

Gadjets that control the speed of computer fans have been put forward as an idea, but don't want to waste bucks on something that's not suitable.

We are talking 12volt cable to shore so we don't have to keep rowing out, because the battery needs charging, radio binding has failed etc.

We would ideally like a sweeping light rather than a blinking light as it is a good sized lake 7 acres.

Looking forward to any ideas, and if anyone is interested in the build, we have a regatta on the 22nd July post code y0424ps or see YMBC web site for directions

one of the rotating amber beacons that we used before digital used to use an o ring and pulley system. The lamp stayed still and a lightweight plastic mirror spun around it, find one of those and fiddle with the gearing, perhaps?

Simple - no moving parts

or moving parts - look like continuous rotation servo

The ones we have, the small motor shaft is held against a rubber disc on the bottom of the lamp by a spring, so gearing isn't possible.
