Title: Balne Moor Svitzer Challenge Shield and night sail 16th September
Post by: Butts on August 20, 2018, 12:46:45 pm
A little more notice than usual as this is one of the big ones at Balne Moor :-)) .

The Svitzer challenge involves teams of three tuggers competing for the sponsor's shield. The format will be single, two tug and then three tug tows with the courses getting incrementally more difficult.

As always everyone is welcome to come along and have a go.  If you do not have a tug, someone will lend you one.

If you just want to scale sail, you can, just keep out of the way of the tuggers.

After this event supper will be available followed by a sunset sail when you'll be able to show off your boat's lighting.  We do need an idea of numbers for the catering so, if you're thinking about coming let me know on here :-)) . More details of catering nearer the date

The towing challenge will start at about 10.30 and the entry fee will be £3 per team or £1.50 for scale sailing.

Sat nav instructions DN14 0ER.

Hi =Butts at long last I now have another (Car) and yes posted a question on (mayhem) about a week ago and Got an invitation to come along on the 16th Yes I will bring my Tug( and look forwards to your (Comments?) However the intention is to Bring my brother and joint friend as we all wish to see and learn more about (Towing) There are lots of questions that could be solved by asking your members and yourself? if permitted? We do have a long way to come (Rugby Town) midlands so will all come in one car the Question is timing
There is a time of 10.30 ? on 16th We are assuming that is visitors welcome to come in and that is AM ? also mentioned is (Evening) Pm that day? could you let me know so we could time it to get there Am when open and see how it goes Please You may still have my details from before to send (Private reply? or any method before the 16th Please Roy

Greetings everyone at Balne,
The Southport crew will be coming over with two Norton cross's even though I have had serious (and I mean serious) grief with my boat this week. I will explain in full when we get there. Briefly my DX6 packed in and what we thought was a minor issue turned into a monumental one.
See you all On the 16th.
          Cheers, Pete. :-)) :-)) :-))

Roy,
It does not matter if you arrive later than 10.30 am, the event will start at about that time, but there will be plenty of time to join in.

The evening sail is a social event to allow people the chance to show off their model's lighting. We used to have it in mid summer, which was a little silly given how long it took to get dusk. Hopefully things will start earlier this time, but again we understand that people travelling long distances need to get back on the road.

We'll all be happy to help you sort out any problems, and you're welcome to test your skills with one of our tows :-)) .

Pete,
It will be good to see you guys again, and to hear about your tribulations.  I'm just starting on a Maltby hull, but it will not be showing its face this year :embarrassed: . It won't be a Maltby when finished though.  I'm still persevering with the schottel driven tractor tug, but put it this way, I'll not be sneaking up on anyone :}

Can those who intend to stay for the evening sail please let me know, so that we can gauge the catering needs.

Hi Guys and Gals hopefully we will make it this time WE that is my brother and Friend are trying to find out all the regulations as my brother is about to build a Tug? Friend Graham (not really a builder? ) he bought an old one and has still not finished a (Tow barge)? this week end I am trying to get out an old tow from our club NOT very Often used ? apparently there used to be some (Tuggers) in the club but not many now? for me I like my tug and believe it isn't that bad? one trouble we have is the water leval dropping this year ?I have a home made tubing launcher made by my brother as (TUG) is quite heavy? and Im wondering about fitting it in with two pasengers? do you have methods of lowering in to the water ? ? I will possible bring or make a Rope sling? if I cannot fit in my launcher? any Ideas would help ?Thanks carnt wait?? see you soon Roy

Hi Roy,

Don't bother trying to bring a launcher, we have three ways of putting boats in the water.

We have a variety of straps of the cam belt type, we have a trolley type launcher and we also have a fixed large boat launcher at the pond side for the tankers.  Your boat will be no problem :-))

We also are running with a lower pond level as a result of the dry weather, but that is better than the flood we had to contend with at the beginning of the year >>:-(

We operate by the MPBA tug towing rules, a copy is attached to this post.

See you on the 16th!

What's the weather forecast like for tomorrow

The forecast is by no means a washout, but it is for some rain showers.

Unfortunately they also are predicting some wind which always mixes things up at Balne Moor %%

   Hi everyone,
We had another brilliant day at Balne and the Yorkie weather gods were kind to us although quite a windy day. Thanks to Steve and Poll for all your help and advice it was greatly appreciated especially in the difficult towing conditions, Tess did a great job in the kitchen keeping us sustained for the challenge of the towing malarkey. Can't wait for the next one hopefully to do better.
We will be over for the North Sea winches and look forward to seeing you all on the day.
Kind regards, Pete and Steve SMBC. :-)) :-)) :-))

Yes, another great day at Balne Moor :-))

Even the weather behaved for us except for a very challenging wind. I suppose it gave me a good excuse though :}

A big thank you to all who attended and took part.  I have photos which I will post later

Thank You All at this Club for the very kind and very helpful way you greeted us and treated us. The hot food was great to keep us going after a long trip from the midlands. This does not matter it was well worth it and will get along to this club in the future (Distant dose NOT matter ) when people are most welcoming. I would say this is one of the best days out with tugs ( and members of another club) I have had in years. It seems as if I now have the knowledge that I can use in another (TUG) ?? and the 32 scale looks like the way to go! I did have slight problems with my Tug on the day, but nothing was to much trouble for them to help.
Any one who wants to learn more and see how (Tug Towing) should be done needs to see this Club operate. Thank you for your photos to view as I had forgotten my camera on the day.
Again Thank you all involved. (Yoshic)......Roy
