Title: 540 Motor short shaft
Post by: klz on September 02, 2018, 09:48:34 pm
Hello all, a club member went to howes models a couple weeks ago I asked him to get me a 12v 540 motor he came back with this one https://howesmodels.co.uk/product/johnson-540-3-pole-motor-4-5-15-volts/ I never looked at the motor when he handed it over I went to use it last night and the shaft is only 5mm long and none of the couplings I have will fit it as the grub screw barley holds it on once load is on it I'm sure it will just spin off.  Does anyone know any that will fit it the shaft diameter is 3mm

I could certainly relocate the grub screw on a coupling for you - dependent on what coupling you have. My concern echos yours though, even if you can get a screw on there, there's no guarantee of getting a good fit on the shaft with it being that short

Just an idea, you could use a steel roll pin like the one in this link

This
is just an example as you would have to find one that had the correct internal diameter so that it would be a nice tight fit. The other end could then be fitted on to a short 3mm OD extension piece or directly on to a 3mm OD prop shaft.T
Also of course, it might be a lot less palaver to get another motor with a longer shaft  :-)
Ian.

Andyn thanks for the offer of relocating the grub screw I think I will take Ian's advice and just get another one I might find a use for this motor later on.

Not to be a damp squib but a roll pin won't work...serval reasons but hay ho  ;)
If you can't get you coupling either Andy or  will sort it  :-))

Why won't a roll pin work?

I've used one on a motor shaft before, albeit not in a model boating context, and it worked fine.

British Imperial Framed electric motors are quoted in HP [Horse Power]

That 540 motor with a shaft like that is not even a Donkies Anything  {-)

Return to Sender or throw it in the bin...................

It would be a very small diameter roll pin, and I don't think it would leave much shaft left, and would probally sheer  {:-{
